Running a HDD through HiFi

Hi all,
This is my first post so sorry if it's on the wrong forum.
I'm looking to gain space by packing my CD collection away and I would like to put the whole collection onto a hard drive and then play the files through my existing HiFi cd player and/or amp. I want to know if this could be done by accessing the HDD via a laptop or PC, selecting what songs or album to play, and then using the HiFi to play the music.
At present I play CDs on a HiFi cd player and amp and music files on my PC are played through the soundcard to the same amp.
Can anyone suggest the best way to do this, if it is possible?

One option is to stream your music straight from your PC/Laptop with a squeezebox? The new squeezebox touch also has a usb socket, so you can connect up an external hard drive too.

Thanks for the reply. This looks good!! The Squeezebox Touch may be exactly what I'm looking for, especially as it supports wireless and USB. I'll do some reading up now. Thanks again.

Squeezebox's really are a good bit of kit! Check out the Streamers and Network Music players forum Streamers & Network Music Players - AVForums.com there's loads of information on there!

Re: Running a HDD through HiFi

Squeezebox Touch definitely ticks all boxes.
I've read that, if I accessed a local HDD to play music, I wouldn't need to use Squeezecenter. Would a menu appear on the unit and if so, would it be a windows style (ie. folders & files)? Or would I have to use a PC screen to set playlists etc?
