Re: Another newbie "what streamer" type post...
Gosh. I just go by what I read. I know those editing suites are low end, but they are about at my editing standard - I just want to edit out the noise and tearing from my AVCHD footage.
Didn't mean to be a jinx.

Page 8, plays .ifo (from vob files ) and .iso.
If you buy one, put me out of my misery and tell me if it plays AVCHD files.

As you say, VOB's are covered. Now all I need is the refund for the 1600.
And the best price for the 8000.

Rhubarbe
The abigs is certainly not a rebadged product it is made by one of the big players in the field .. and has a steady stream of firmware support. Have a look at the manufacturer's website here www.sarotech.com. Firmwares are under the support section.
I have one and so far (touch wood) have never had any problem
But i'd wait a few days if I were you .. they are apparently about to launch a new model with native support for all Hd formats missing in the current model including h264 avc1 and mkv

Re: Another newbie "what streamer" type post...
I think I'm leaning towards the 8000 still. Read up on the Kiss, but I dont really need the DVD drive functionality of it. Looking on the Netgear 8000 forum, it does seem like the beta firmwares are coming on well.
Before I buy anything though, I must do some cabling...

You're right. It just looked similar to my memory. I see now that the Abigs looks better (1080p vs 1080i).

That MPCClub review was from way back in June and the firmware has come on a LOT since then.
Re your AVHCD files, I'll be happy to put you out of your misery but I don't have any such files. Is there anywhere to download a sample file so I can test it?

Re: Another newbie "what streamer" type post...
Brilliant, thanks very much.
Here are some sample .MTS AVCHD files from my camcorder. The subject matter is a tad on the dull side but that's family holidays for you.

Avoid the huge file. It's my FIL doing Elvis. He's not bad but it does go on a bit.
Thanks again.

OK, I've had a fiddle and the only way I can get them to play is by renaming them to .TS files. They do play fine tho (although I've not got a HD telly to play them through) so I can't believe it would be THAT hard for Netgear to tweak the firmware to recognise them using their default extension?

The very problem I have at this moment in time... Alot of choice, but a lot of bad forum press about every device available...
I am tempted to go with the KISS 1600 again... my original choice before I came across the forum and all the other devices.
Why the KISS 1600, because it's got a DVD player as well, but a question for all the KISS 1600 owners? - Do you know if it can stream from a Synology DS-106E NAS?
If someone says YES, I will buy it tomorrow.
Ah! - I found another player (Ziova CS505) although again I am seeing crappy reviews....
I wonder which one is the better (Kiss 1600 or Ziova CS505)?

I wouldn't touch either of them.

Re: Another newbie "what streamer" type post...
Neither would I, old technology so either will struggle with HR stuff if it plays at all. What about buying an XBOX-HD drive and using the Popcorn USB slot giving you a streamer with HD/DVD capabilty.

Re: Another newbie "what streamer" type post...
Its an interesting post. I am looking at one of these streamers and was also looking at the KISS 1600. It is £150 at present at PC World too, which on the face of it seems pretty good. I would just like some reader reviews.....
It seems that the firmware on the Linksys and Netgear could do with some improvement...... to say the least!!
Decisions.... decisions.... i duuno and at a time when we should all be buying for others...... not for ourselves.... lol

Re: Another newbie "what streamer" type post...
Oh well, one can only ponder for so long .... I've just gone and ordered an EVA8000. I'm working on the principle that none of these are perfect, I'll probably buy another one in a year or so - but in the meantime it should at least fit easily in my rack and has its own wireless built in. It will be a couple of weeks before I have all the bits togther (this is my project for the holidays) but I will post back.

Please do report back on what you think of it. As I've mentioned on these forums before, don't settle for the shipped version of the firmware, nor for the version that automatically downloads when you connect to the internet upon installation. Instead, join the beta forum and download the later versions. They're much better, although given they're beta they're not perfect.
If you're anything like me, you'll end up buying more than one of them
Just one word of caution on wireless, streaming DVD/Hi-def video is quite bandwidth intensive so don't blame the EVA if it struggles
Consider wired or homeplugs if you're going down that route

Re: Another newbie "what streamer" type post...
I agree with Scooby Doo, make sure you use the beta firmware to get the most out of your EVA - you may find some bugs but the benefits definatly outweigh the bugs!!!
