The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
Hi all,
Was anyone sad enough to attempt to log in to www.popcornhour.com at 7am UK time this morning to try and bag one of these? I think I was one of the lucky ones, I paid by Google checkout and I have a receipt but nothing showing in my order history on popcornhour.com itself. Here's hoping
Anyone else order one?
Dave.

Re: The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
They look the danglies but Ive tried to not get carried away with the hype. Surely stock will filter through eventually and it should become easily available. Plus ordering through them is from China is it not. Not good for warranty purposes. And ordering without any reviews also is a bit risky.
Also its the first unit with the new chips in them, there will be others.

Re: The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
All the info you need is here:
Popcornhour Media Player
Post #8
I have been reading up on this and it seems very good for the price and if you reserve it through the forum mentioned in the above post; you get it for $199 including all taxes, postage and 12 months EU warranty.
They have a prototype model they are testing and a review should be available shortly.

Re: The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
The problem with reserving one on the MPC site is they have limited supplies, you'll be lucky to get one, isn't already over subscribed?
I've taken a risk by ordering this morning from the Popcornhour site, but I figure if I don't get on with it, the rarity value will mean I can shift it on eBay for what I paid for it.
Dave.

Your right that you will be very lucky to get one from MPC because the reserve list if over subscribed but after the first batch they should be getting more in and they do come with a 12 month EU warranty.
I might just wait and see how the first batch works out for people and then order one if it is any good.
I was just thinking about ordering a QNAP 109 and streaming that around the house using a wireless media player.
Decisions, decisions......

Re: The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
Yup.
I've got a Thecus 5200 full of media just waiting to be played!
However............. Despite being in a hurry to get something, and the hype surrounding the popcorn hour, I am loath to order one without seeing it working. I have been disappointed before............
I will just have to wait I think.
Cheers, Gerald.

Same here, Ive been waiting for a while for a good streamer, this and the dlink 750 look like potentials but I need to know it works like it should.
Oh and isn't it 199 Euros not dollars off the MPC thread. So around £140 or so.

Re: The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
Just an aside.
A colleague was telling me earlier today that you can now get 2.6 US dollars for a single British pound!!
Amazing if it's true. Puts the cost of this unit at approx, err, 77 GBP or 110 Euro. Makes me weep!!
If only I had a holiday to the states pending. Blast!
Regards, Gerald.

Re: The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
Hi all
Thanks for that. Dohh!!
It just goes to show, you can't believe a thing your ill informed mates tell you!!
Said he heard it on the radio, needs to get his ears cleaned out!
Anyway...... Just looking at a few early comments about the popcorn hour over on mpc. Apparently the first batch have arrived. There already seem to be a few questions over lack of FTP and a PC slave connection? Seems designed to stream mainly over Ethernet (which is fine) but only has a 10/100 interface?
Oh well, for the moment I will continue to transfer my already almost silent HTPC into it's new Acousticase and add the new ATI (MSI) silent 2600 XT. At least this drives my plasma via DVI at 1360x768 natively giving a better picture than any other method (so far).
I will watch this space with great interest.
Cheers again. Gerald.

Re: The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
It seems that they released this in the US with only 100 units in stock (according to AVS Forum thread). surprise surprise they sold out pretty quickly.
Seems a bit lame to do a release without appropriate stock, it just adds to the hype.

Re: The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
If the Popcornhour model delivers what it promises it should be great box of tricks. I have been lucky as I believe I am in the first 100 to request a unit from mpcclub.com. Fingers crossed :-)

I'm not sure (correct me if I'm wrong), but I don't think there's been any clarity around the actual initial production run numbers?
And as far as "it just adds to the hype", you say that as if it's a bad thing
Dave.

Re: The Popcornhour / Networked Media Tank thread
I agree with PD Barbs.
It is obvious, numbers or no numbers, that they had a paltry amount of these in supply. That makes the whole exercise look like a giant publicity stunt.
The problem with publicity stunts is that they can backfire badly, as many a celebrity has found out over the years!!! I think they have just succeeded in making themselves look silly and maybe this is what PD was alluding to.
I certainly can't take any company seriously that runs a product launch like a bunch of amatures.
Gerald.
