Android based set top box of some kind, never heard of it till now. Looks to be running a version of Android 2 and a custom skin.

It's suggested here that it's an All Winner A10 device, not sure if that's accurate or not (the specs do seem to match up) but the A10 chipset is very good with hardware decoding for all major formats and you should be able to install Android 4 updates direct from All Winner. Also can run linux OS on it and eventually be able to run XBMC in the future.

If you do get one I would be interested to know if it is an All Winner A10 device, you might have to open it up though to see the chip inside.

Update: Not an A10 chip an unfortunate coincidence it shares the similar specs but it's actually a Rokchip device.

Thanks for your comments. Sadlynow all sold out at that price (£50).

I'm not particularly computer literate so don't understand the relevance of an ARM A10 chip (let alone the 'All Winner' bit) - do I take it that that's a good thing? In your opinion, is this item good value at around £50?

When the product description mentions web browsing, does this mean I can access any webpage using the Intempo that my PC currently can? What I need is a cheap box with unlimited web access and unlimited access to files on my PC (via the router) - so is this product the one for me?

All Winner is a company that makes cheap but capable chipsets, the A10 is their new one and is very capable and very low priced ($7) which is how such a low price point can be gotten for £50.

It's running Android smartphone OS so that means the Android web browser, you can view any website but sites which require plugins on a PC wont work, only HTML5 video will work. There is a Flash plugin for Android but it doesn't always work and development has been stopped so don't expect it to work in the future.

You might want to look at the MK802, Z802, those are sticks that plugin to the TV and only have wireless support or go with Mele A1000/2000 which are set top box based and can take a hard drive, have wired ethernet, HDMI/VGA output. All of those are All Winner A10 devices, there are other Android boxes out there you can get too (like Sumvision Nano boxes) but they arent as open as these ones which allow you to run other software via SDCards.

The only other box with a credible web browser is the Boxee Box (same deal no plugin support), which is more intended for TV usage then Android is.

If looking for a super cheap A10 board there is a guy from the UK selling them here for £40 with no case just the raw board itself, same as other devices just no casing. You can see other A10 devices on the XBMC Wiki if you want to go price hunting.

Thanks for the info. and some very useful product suggestions, many I'd never heard of before (I particularly like the look, and price, of the Mele). I checked out reviews and specs of the Boxee Box some months ago and concluded that it promised more than it actually delivered in terms of access to websites, so I didn't go with it. It also cost a bit too much for me at that time.

I now need to decide whether to wait until this market develops further (i.e. cheaper prices, improved products) or buy a cheap unit now and expect to upgrade in a couple of years or so. Decisions, decisions...

XBMC is still in development for A10 devices, there's a thread over on XBMC forums you can follow, there is no eta other than when it's done.

As for flashing other firmwares yes it's possible though without an original image of the firmware to fall back on I wouldn't recommend trying it just in case anything goes wrong (you cant kill A10 devices but Android tweaked for another A10 box may have unforeseen issues), if you can contact Intempo ask to see if they will supply one. You could possibly dump the original firmware as an image file but you'd need someone's assistance in how to do that, preferably familiar with linux/Android.

Just to be absolutely certain (I'm pretty sure it's an A10) if one of you could open up one of those Intempos you should see the All Winner A10 chip inside to confirm or a possibly easier option see if it boots the All Winner linux OS image via SD card.

What version of BSPLAYER would I need for this A10 device?
And where could I download the APK for it?

Cheers!

Don't the Intempo have the stock Google market on them ? If no then you might be able to install it but usually it's not so simple.

You can just google the free version of bsplayer apk or the free version of MX Player is a better option as it works with A10 hardware decoder.

Ok thanks, Ill let you know how the Linux test goes.

BTW it has AppsLib installed but not Google Market - just seen your link so ill give it a go!

Neither MX player OR BSplayer are found in AppsLib when I search.
