your file naming is very odd!
Just tried to download the "renamer" software, but smart screen filter has blocked it. I've not seen this before, any way round this ?

Turn it off, or use a different browser, like chrome.

Turned on my wdtv last night for first time for about a week, suddenly no wired network connection available. Turned on and off still no connection. Rebooted router and NAS, tried again, no luck. Rechecked all wired connections (none have been changed since I last used it). Connected wirelessly without a problem. One hour after this all began I checked network cable in back of WDTV and realised that although it was clicked in, there is a couple of mm of movement. Pressed it fully in and bingo. Only conclusion is that the wife must have moved it when dusting and there is enough play to cause disconnect. My network lead seems normal and plastic clip still in place.

Blutac now deployed on back of unit to hold network cable in place, but thought I would highlight in case anyone else has problem. By the time I had powered off and rebooted half a dozen times without wired connection it also seemed to lose my network shares from media library and had to go back in and re-save.

I got mine yesterday. Initial impressions are ok but it's not fully operational yet...

It does the online content streaming (Netflix, Vudu etc) ok which is pleasing because that was the primary reason I bought it.

However, I cannot seem to make it see my NAS shares. When I go to the appropriate area to add "Windows Shares" I just get the little orange circular arrow twirling around without ever seeming able to find it. I've never had a problem finding my NAS shares on any of our computers and my existing Netgear NeoTV550 found it instantly and was able to scan it etc.

So far, the only way I can get this WDTV Live to see the media on my NAS is by enabling the DNLA server but I don't really want to go down this route because using this a/ means that certain file types ie AVCHD iso are ignored and b/ it lumps all the content between shares together whereas my NeoTV sees them as "TV", "Films" etc.

Has anyone else had any similar problems getting the unit to see their NAS?

Did you enter your NAS username and password in the system settings?
I left mine on default and spent hours trying to find out why it woudn't see my folders on the NAS.

Hi all,
I am seriously thinking of getting a 3TB WD My book live (£184 from Ebuyer) so that I can play back full BR rips without stutter on my SMP.
However before I spend the cash, I have a working DLink DNS-323 (RAID1 2 x 1.5TB set up) that when using SAMBA I get stuttering with full BR rips. If I try to use the DNS-323 in NFS mode with the SMP it finds the share and just hangs, so I have to hold down the power button to reset the SMP. Funnily enough with the older WDTV Live I have no problem with full BR rips as that box finds and works perfectly with NFS - I have installed the BRAD custom firmware on the older model, hence being able to use NFS.
If I run the full BR rip through Handbrake and set a target size of 8096 the file pays perfectly on both units, so compressing the file seems to cure the issue.
My network is fully wired and at Gig speeds. I have multiple Netgear GS808 Gig switches around the house where the items with Ethernet plug into. I know the SMP is only 10/100, I am also aware that some people have recommended plugging the SMP into a standard 10/100 switch.

Finally my questions;
1) Has anyone got a set up using the same NAS as me? Unlikely I know, if not has anyone successfully set up NFS on the SMP - If so any tips please?
2) Does anyone agree/disagree that the 3TB WD Live is a solution worth pursuing?
3) Would it be worth buying/borrowing a 10/100 switch to connect to the SMP?

Sorry for the long post and questions, I hope someone can help me out.

Andy.

Thanks for such a brisk response!

I hadn't done that: access to my NAS shares is not un/pw protected but do you mean the admin user name and password i.e. what would needed to access the administration of the NAS itself? If so, that means the WDTV needs Admin access to the NAS...?

the wd will write to your nas, it creates a folder for the media library info. so it will need admin access to your nas (well, it does for mine !!)

so go put the admin password in the network settings and see if you can see your shared folders.

Thanks to you two guys for this info.

Admittedly I was in a bit of a hurry yesterday & didn't exactly research the hell out of this but I think WD's documentation *might* be a bit lacking here because I didn't see any mention of this when setting up.

I shall do this when I get home later and hopefully it will sort it out.

Talking of admin access to the NAS: do either of you - or anyone else for that matter - have any experience with the unit messing around with any files on there? I have read a few accounts of people claiming the WDTV can randomly delete files Only my music share is currently backed up and I could seriously do without it losing files or whole shares' worth of media!

Hey toddy28, Is there a USB port at the back of the 3TB? I know ethernet is there but i'll like to find out if more storage can be added using a usb port

no worries, i hope it works when you get home.

as for files being deleted, i've not had any probs. i've seen a couple of threads on this, but touch wood, no issues here.

let us know how you get on and if you more info, have a search on this and the older thread. I got all my setup info from here, didn't even read any official blub

Something I noticed that had issues with my nas is that check your wdtv belongs to the sane workgroup on your network, it comes set to workgroup and my network is on homegroup but once I changed it I could see my shares again

It must be storing the info for the folder art somewhere, I just can't find it.
I will try deleting al the info in the folder later after work.

Saw it posted elsewhere... change the file name from folder.jpg to
1.metathumb, it will then pick up the image after a full power off and
rescan.

Works for me :-)

Apple Time Capsule

Hi All

Apologies if this has been mentioned before but this thread is rather long. I was wondering if anybody could tell me if this plays nicely with a Time Capsule. I have the previous WDTV and it couldnt see the TC at all meaning I had to get rid.

Cheers

John

I've made some progress. I entered the name of the workgroup (in my case READYNAS) and it sees that. However I'm not really sure what user name and password it wants from me.

It doesn't accept the user name and password I use to access the NAS from the web browser and I haven't set up any user name and password for any other device to connect to it but it won't accept a blank user name and or password: it tells me that the username and password are invalid...

Not really sure what to do from here

I'm definitely using the right username & password but I'm wondering if this is what it actually wants? My shares are not password protected: I don't need any kind of logon for any of my computers or Netgear NeoTV so I'm wondering why this is proving such a ball-ache

My NAS has a number of shares i.e. Films, TV, Music etc - hopefully this device is capable of seeing multiple shares?

I think I'll have to contact WD tomorrow as google searches don't seem to be turning anything up thus far.

Been trying to get this device working correctly all day. Sometimes it sees my WD NAS, sometimes not. Set it to factory reset, then it was compiling a media library for at least 5 hours (I think it may have froze).
Getting to the point of binning it, lifes too short !

Seems like what it actually wanted for the user name was the name of the share itself, with no password. It then connects

However, I haven't yet fathomed how to add multiple shares. Firstly I had Films, now music but can't seem to have more than one. This may well be a nice little unit when running but set-up is a bit of joke really...

Netflix forced 24fps ?

Hi,

I gather you can stream Netflix on this new media player. I presume it is 60Hz using 3:2 pulldown for film-based material.

Is it possible to get smooth judder-free playback by forcing the frame rate to 24Hz or is it still juddery ?

good to hear you've got it working !!!

to add shares, go to system, media library, media library manager and add your share folders.

for info i've got all my stuff in one shared folder, with seperate sections for films/music/tv/photo's, so not to difficult to sort out.

good luck with the rest of the setup

Got one of these delivered from dabs the other day, and I'm generally very pleased with it. Nice interface and picture quality etc, decent remote too, and it's nice to have all the streaming options too.

Couple of niggles though, and a couple of questions for experienced users.

First is a lack of thumbs on local storage. I actually had no idea until testing yesterday that the 360 has the same behaviour, auto thumbs on network media, but none on local media. Why is that?

Is there a program that automatically generates thumbnails for local drives?

I'm not interested in covers at all, as half the content I have is boxing and MMA, I'd much rather just have an auto thumbnail, as per normal PC viewing or a 360 using the network.

Second, no option to change aspect ratio while viewing. This can be a bit annoying, as I watch a mixture of 4:3 and 16:9 content, and of course forget to go into options first, then once I start, I have to go back to options, then browse through folders again after changing etc.

I've heard of custom FW for this device, does anyone know if the custom FW has the options of changing aspect ratio on the fly?

Cheers,
Rumblesushi
