Further on the Zappati thing - I think you need USB (or SD card) inserted for that to work? I have a SD card inserted but I can't remember what it's for now!

thats where the extra above 2gb comes in. you configure a stick with 2gb system storage and the rest of the stick can be used for other stuff such as zappati etc.

AnyDVD HD + Handbrake will do that.

Zappiti will still work on a Dune without any local storage installed.
System storage enables you to create shortcuts, which makes getting to the _Zappiti folder easier. Local storage for files & folders allows you to put the _Zappiti & Zappiti_Resources folders on the Dune which can make the Zappiti UI respond a bit quicker.

Just got my Dune HD H1 setup.

Is there anyway of attaching the entire unit to my P.C to do file transfer to hard disk inside Dune?

Tried sending a few DVD rips over Ethernet and it took hours.

Or would it be simpler to just buy a USB SATA hard drive caddy and take drive out of Dune and plug into P.C this way?

Have read that plugging Dune hard drive into windows p.c can stop it working when plugged back into Dune?

there is a USB slave port on the back of the H1 allowing it to be used as an external drive to the PC.

How the drive is formatted however is key. If you arent running the latest beta firmware and have allowed the H1 to format the drive then it will be formatted in EXT format. By default Windows does not understand this, it only knows NTFS.

It would be best to format the drive as NTFS. This can be done using a PC or install the latest beta and format it again on the H1 - it now asks what format you want.

Then it will appear in Windows Explorer and its just drag 'n' drop

You formatted it before you sent it to me so what file system did you use?

ah right

to be honest cant remember! We switched from letting the Dune do it, to doing it on a PC for this very reason. Depending when you ordered it, it could be either I cant remember exactly when we switched.

If you have the content elsewhere then just reformat in the PC in disk manager

I have been using an internal hard disk in my Dune for more than 12 months, working well. However, I got a Synology NAS for xmas...and now the pain begins...

Would welcome some help:

To find my files on the NAS I go to Network Browser/UPnP/Diskstation and the files are in there.

However, the folders on display are the default shared folders on the NAS. In there, I have my ISOs, but the NAS doesn't support ISOs in these default "media" folders so I get error messages when I try to replay them. In my other media player (WDTV live) I have overcome this by accessing the "files", rather than "media", if that makes sense.

I have read that if I access the files using SMB on my Dune, rather than UPnP, then I will be able to play the ISOs, but when I enter through SMB, although Diskstation shows up under "Workgroup", the folder is empty.

I'd be grateful for any support before I throw the whole lot out of the window!

UPnP/DLNA have limited format support and AFAIK never support ISO images. However the standard SMP (and NFS) network protocoles support all formats and so will play an ISO without problem.
I would guess that the Dune does not see any contents in the media folders on the NAS due to access rights. I don't know the NAS software so can only advise that you set access to Everyone without the need for username & password to see if that then works. If it does you can start adding security back if required to limit the access to your media.

Mark.

Can someone help me with the torrent client?

It has a few options...

One says to stop torrents when player is started. Does this mean it will download torrents when in standby but will stop when I turn on the Dune to say watch a film? Because it doesn't seem to be working the torrent just continues away.

Only other option is to turn torrents on when player is on but it seems to be on all the time anyway

Also how do you navigate round the web browser? The mouse cursor is fixed and remote navigation just moves around the web page?

I think that is it... Everything else seems to be explained in the rather vague online manual

I've never used the Torrent client on the Dune, so all I can do is point you to the torrent page of the Dune website - Dune Firmware Zone / Torrent Client

There is also a page for use of the web browser - Dune Firmware Zone / Web Browser

Both the above and other helpful info for the Dune players is found at the bottom of the Dune firmware page of their site - Dune Firmware Zone

As I've said I've never used the torrent client so can't help much. I don't have any storage directly attached to my player so can't even try it out I'm afraid.
The option 'stop torrents when player is started' to me would point to the player stopping the torrents when you play a media file rather than stopping them when you power the player up - but that is just a guess.

What about the browser - did the instructions help at all? If not then all I can suggest is that you try using a USB keyboard & mouse. I've got the Dune keyboard which also doubles as a replacement remote, but at around £60 it is an expensive option if not used regualrly.

I've just set up a NAS (I might chuck it in the bin yet...). It streams to my Dune H1 and anslo a new WDTV in another room.

The WDTV scrapes (?) the internet and attaches thumbnails and information on the movie. Very neat. Looking at the files on the NAS shows that for a movie file there is one, and sometimes 2 (I don't know why) files with the same name as the movie but different extensions. I guess they obviously contain the moviesheet data.

However, whilst they are not displayed in the browser on the WDTV, they are displayed on the Dune. It's very unsightly and makes the list at least twice as long as it should be.

Is there anyway to get the Dune to show only the movie file?

You can either use a movie wall such as my movies or zappiti etc so you dont see the directory structure, or, you can tell the dune machine that those files are system files and should not be shown.

this is done with a hidden file called dune_folder.txt - http://dune-hd.com/firmware/misc/dune_folder_howto.txt

Quote:
- "system_files = {pattern1}[,{pattern2}...]".
- Allows to specify which files should be treated as system and
thus hidden (when "Hide system files = Yes" option is enabled in
Setup).
- Each "pattern" can be the exact name of file/folder, or a
pattern including wildcards ("*" means any sequence of
characters, "?" means any single character).
- Example:
- "system_files = *.aai,icon.bmp"

Thanks. I really don't like the Zappiti movie wall at all so the alternative aproach appeals. But oh my lord that looks complicated! I shall give it a go later though...

Can you tell me where I actually put that text? The instructions don't make it clear at all. Do I put it on the SD card that I've got inserted in there?

where the media is, but I'm not sure if you need it in every directory or just the top level

so...

\\machine\media\movies\dune_folder.txt
\\machine\media\movies\film\film.iso
\\machine\media\movies\filmb\filmb.iso

or

\\machine\media\movies\film\dune_folder.txt
\\machine\media\movies\film\film.iso
\\machine\media\movies\filmb\dune_folder.txt
\\machine\media\movies\filmb\filmb.iso

Just bought this player and what a relief that there is an owners thread as I am stuck! This player is not for the faint hearted. Owning both a NMP100P and a WD Live I am lost trying to add my NAS. Could someone please walk me through?

As we need subtitles (.srt files) we cant use the UPnP connection so I need to add my NAS (Diskstation). So far I have gone in to Sources/Network Browser/New Network Folder. Trying to follow their awful instructions (!) I left the first field (Name) blank, chose SMB (is that right?), the IP address of the NAS in the Server field, the name of the NAS in the Folder field and then username and password. When I then connect I get "Network Resource Not Available" then "Cannot access network folder".

Pretty sure I'm not miles away but would be very grateful if some could tell me what to put in each field and whether it should be SMB or NFS.

Many many many thanks

Browsing to find a NAS doesn't always work, but if you press the 'pop up menu' button when in the 'Sources' screen and then select 'New network folder' it should be easy enough to get to the NAS.
Name: whatever you want to call the shortcut
Type: I use SMB but if you prefer NFS then that's fine
Server: the IP address of your NAS - make sure it is a static IP address on the NAS
Folder: the folder name on the NAS you want this share to point to
User: if usernames are required then enter it here
Password: if passwords are required then enter it, if not leave blank

Assuming you enter all the correct details you should now have a direct link to your NAS.

Mark.

What shares do you have setup on the NAS? The share name on the NAS is what should be entered in the Folder section of the setup - so for me I have a Video share and this is what I put in the Folder section when setting up the link and so it points directly to this folder rather thaqn the route of the array.
Try setting an account on the NAS that doesn't require a username and password to get access. If this then works you know it is a security problem stopping the link from accessing the NAS.

The other option to make browsing for the NAS possible is to make sure that both the NAS & Dune are using the same 'Workgroup' name. Once set to the same for both devices you should then be able to browse to the NAS. Then once in the folder you want a shortcut for you can use the 'pop up menu' to create a link with all the details prefilled for you.

Mark.

Hi Mark - thanks again...

ok, so the good news is that I can now see all the folders within my NAS (and play them) under 'Workgroup' (before it stated it was empty). So that's all resolved now.

However the shortcut still doesnt work. It's not the end of the world but I wouldnt mind a shortcut as right now I have to go through 4 different levels to get to the file!
