Media Streaming (Multiple Destinations)

Hi All

I am fairly new to the whole AV experience, but have roughly the following kit within a server rack within one of the cupboards in the house.

Wii
PS3
QNAP 12TB HD
Onkyo 607 for main room with 5.1
Few Sonos Amps for each room speakers
Nevo S70
DVD Player
MusicM8
24 Port Switch
Patch Panel

I don't want any wires or equipment sitting in the house, so have tried to ensure everything can be run back to this server rack. It will also later include a cable/sky box.

I would like to be able to do the following...

Burn all DVD's to my QNAP, then be able to browse from any TV within the house and stream the movie. I would like each TV to be able to stream feeds at the same time, if required. i.e. two people can be in different locations watching different DVD's - The feeds upstairs don't need to be HD!

I would like to be able to control my PS3 and for that matter all the other equipment in the server rack using the S70 or the like. i.e. its a bit pointless it sitting in the cupboard, neatly away, if I can't actually use it!

I would like to use the DVD player to feed any TV if required, i.e. say I wanna watch a DVD in the house somewhere, I could do so on any TV.

Ideally I'd like to keep the Wii in the cupboard and use it from there - but not sure that one will be possible, and not overly fussed if not.

I have considered a popcorn hour, but do i need one for each TV feed? I also considered apple TV - as obviously I could use my iphone over the network to control that, again though, i guess i need one for each tv?

Each TV feed has two cat 6 cables and one sky ariel feed to them.

I would like HD to a couple of the main rooms downstairs.

I hope this is clear?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Yes you will need a Popcornhour (get the A200 model) for each TV, the player is a standalone unit and will read the network shares on your QNAP NAS to play the DVD ISO images. There is also NMT Remote on the iTunes app store that might work the A200.

I wouldn't recommend the AppleTV with your setup too many limitations unless your willing to hack it and run XBMC or Boxee on it instead.

Guys

Thanks for the replies. Isn't there one solution i could use? That can do multiple streaming?

Also, what about the remote controlling aspect of having the PS3 etc sitting in the cupboard?

Thanks

I'd say no to both.

Network media players are standalone units [media source->media player->TV]. Each media player can watch whatever it wants your only bound by the speed of your NAS/LAN and DVD's shouldn't be a problem with multiple movies being watched by different network media players.

PS3 requires discs your always going to have to be accessing it.

I guess your looking for something like a server which can send its video signal to TV sets and be remote controlled, no idea if such a thing even exists. There probably is some high end home theater company that sells something like that with a DVD jukebox but remote controlling & streaming the video signal of the Wii/PS3 doesn't seem practical given the need to swap discs to play games.

You way want to look around this part of the forum instead if thats the case.

I don't mind accessing the PS3 to put a disc in it, but its more controlling it after that point. How far do the controllers normally work with one?

Official bluetooth devices have a range of about 30 feet but people say the PS3 controller works over longer distances although you could run into interference with other devices/building materials. There's also lag to take into account, if your streaming your PS3 video through another source it could introduce delays into when you press a button and what happens on screen.

In summary if you use a Popcorn Hour or a PlayOn Mini in each of the rooms requiring video then you remove the need for a matrix switch and HDMI to Cat5 converters.

I don't think your NAS will have enough juice to be able to serve more than one/two rooms at the same time though so you may need to put a beefier server in front of it.

Getting DVD out of the central hub would in my view be worth sacrificing as to do that you would probably have to be running a matrix switch and conversion of HDMI over Cat5.

On the other bits your S70 can control the central equipment but you will need to add a NEVO Link. You can get a IR to Bluetooth converter for the PS3 as well.

Hope that helps.
