Apple TV - lip sync issue

Sorry if this is the wrong fourm

Am connecting my Apple TV via the HMDI to my Panasonic TV, but using the optical audio to connect to my Yamaha DSP-A2.

Obviously I am getting lovely lip sync issues meaning that I cannot enjoy 5.1 sound.

Would this solution Digital Audio Delay: J.S. Technology
solve the problem?

Is this a vanilla AppleTV no hacks ?

If so are you using self encoded videos or content bought from iTunes store, if it were self encoded there is a small chance it could be the files depending on the encoder your using.

If its stuff bought from the iTunes store then you dont have a lot of options, check the manual to see if your Yamaha DSP-A2 has a built in audio sync system but if it doesn't that box might be the only other choice.

Yes it would.

Some AV receivers have audio delay compensation settings - I'm not sure if yours does though, might be worth checking that before forking out 80quid...

No hacks.

Have only checked it so far on self encoded DVD's for which I use Handbrake.

I do have some itunes content so will check tonight.

The yamaha was made well before lip sync became an issue so there is no delay setting on there

No delay settings on the amp.

For me £80 was far cheaper than the £1400 for a new amp

There was a problem with Handbrake in the past and it produced out of sync audio encodes on the AppleTV is your Handbrake up to date and/or were the films encoded with an older version ?

It is also possible but unlikely that the encoding profile or bitrate is somehow too much for the ATV so the audio is losing sync.

I assume what your doing is putting AC3 5.1 audio into the M4V container, very few of the other x264 encoders support this as its an Apple only option.

Edit: Scratch that XviD4PSP v6 profiles are all high profile H.264 which the ATV doesn't handle.

Have only been using Handbrake for 6-9 months, so it could be that but I have no problems with lip syncwhen I play the files via the Component out (albeit converted down to S-Video) and optical

The AC3 5.1 audio is contained in the m4p format and plays fine through the ATV

All the signs point to "lip sync" but just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed anything

Does using the optical out from the TV make any difference?

Okay,

Spent a good hour last night doing some "testing"

1. itunes bought content seems ok. There is a tiny echo if you leave the TV volume up with the amp volume, but as far as I could see, it looked watchable

2. handbrake encoded material varies. Some stuff looks fine and others are unwatchable. I have trawled through the handbrake forum to no real help

So basically I think for the meantime I can save the £80 and maybe re-encode the files that have the issues and maybe tweak the advanced settings.

Cheers
