MakeMKV

* Decrypts DVD/Blu-ray
* Transfers original video stream to standalone MKV container
* Can rip individual streams from TV show DVDs or compilations.
* Preserves aspect ratio as intended.
* Playable as media file on your WDTV Live or PC media player software like MPC-HC or VLC.

No you dont thats completely false. DVD's have either AC3 or DTS audio and MakeMKV dumps the original DVD audio into the MKV, the WDTV Live supports AC3 & DTS.

Is the MKV filesize same as the DVD size after ripping?
For example - If I rip an original 7.5GB DVD, is the MKV file also 7.5GB?

All soundtracks and subs (DD5.1/DTS and so on) is saved in the MKV file, correct?

No because your ripping the main movie out, depending on the DVD most usually have extras of some sort so they are discarded which means a lower file size.

Subs are optional though it can depend on the player if it can read embedded idx subs (raw DVD subs) you may be prefer getting the srt version of the subtitles and using mkvtoolnix to transplant the srt file into the MKV.

I thought that you are copying the whole DVD with extras and all audio tracks with MakeMKV. I was planning to play the mkv file in my (soon ariving) Mede8er media player.

Can I expect to be get the subs viewable from the MKV file on the Mede8er? And the menues?
No advantage to make an ISO file instead?

The point of MakeMKV is to rip the movie with its original video and audio track to a standalone MKV file, it does not do menus.

ISO files are disc image files not media files, the Mede8er can open ISO files and play them if thats what you require.
