Would this be possible with realtek based players...?

So, this is very wishful thinking but I was wondering if any of these players (Hisense, O!Play, Xtreamer etc) could run squeezeplay/softsqueeze to work as a squeezebox playback device?

I already have a NAS running squeezebox server, so I'm only thinking about playback.

I believe most of them run a version of linux and some are hackable (hisense & O!Play come to mind) so that's the only basis I have really!

I don't know if they'd have enough processing power/memory to run it, let alone how you'd get the software to acess the audio output (whether just plain phono stereo, SPDIF or even HDMI?!)?

I was thinking of using like a squeezebox receiver with iPod Touch + iPeng - ie no TV/monitor required.

I know you can get a sb receiver for about £80, so they are also fairly cheap but it's just for the convenience of having only one (more) box.

Anyone with a decent(ish) knowledge of linux and experience of hacking these have any idea?

Oh, I know I've posted in the streamers & network media players, not the streamers & music players - mainly because I thought you'd have more experience/knowledge about the hardware in these players?

From what I remember, the Squeezebox server itself does not stream as a uPnP/DNLA device. If it were, then you could quite easily use the built in upnp client on the media server.

With regards to running http://softsqueeze.sourceforge.net/ - I see squeezeslave being the best option but you'll have to compile it for uclib/MIPS

Interesting idea nonetheless ... You should end up with a very cheap squeeze slave

Hmm, interesting. Thanks!

My NAS does stream as DLNA (I'm running Vortexbox), but I was after the integration with Squeezebox (iPeng is a great interface).

I also remembered just after posting this that the Xtreamer has an iPhone/Touch app that lets you control it, so I guess I could playback music like that (still headless - no TV/monitor).

I guess the Hisense was very tempting (due to it's price ). If it can playback:
- DVD .iso/Video_TS (with menus?)
- Divx/Xvid
- HD mkv's/M2TS

Which I think it can and I can get squeezeslave working I might have to get one.

Yes it's a great device but not pleased with the network performance using the latest firmware release.

If you're linux savy then may I suggest the o!play as it's far easier to hack, additionally it has more NAND memory.

Interesting indeed and i would go with what s/b Said about Hisense as an Alternative another Realtek player will get reviewed tommrow and that can Run
Xstreamer Firmware minus some remote Control playback..Watch out for the review and we will see what its like against the Hisense and Asus.

Hmm, well I definitely wouldn't call myself linux savvy. I do have command line experience (dating back to the good old dos days - showing my age now ) and have had a bit of experience with linux (Ubuntu & my Vortexbox - which is Fedora 11, all command line).

Shame about the Hisense, still I should know seeing as it's that little bit cheaper than the O!Play.

Still I think I recall another member getting FTP-Topfield working on his O!Play, so that could also be very handy for me (I've got a Topfield 5800 PVR).

Well, I'm in no rush - I'm also waiting to see how the firmware develops for all of these players (I'd love to get HD audio support - bitstreaming mainly). The thought had just struck me about Squeezebox, so that could be a deciding factor (should I actually jump in and buy one!).

well just so that you know what you're in for ... this bit is the easy bit

installing a package manager

Asus O!Play - €119

If you can follow Peter K's instructions

But the tricky bit will be compiling your client app.

- Just giving you a heads up as to what you're getting yourself into

If you have the time and willingness to learn then I send you my finest regards and blessings from silicon heaven

Good luck

Hmm, I wonder what this mythical player could be?

Anyway, they're all pretty similar (with regards to file support) as far as I'm aware. The differences seem to be on HDD support (none, 2.5", 3.5") and the interface.

Yeah, I didn't think it would be easy, just curious if it was possible or not!

I may be willing to put in the time/effort if I feel it's worthwhile (if it'll work!).
