Cancellation of Youtube in Media Players by Google?

Cancellation of Youtube in Media Players by Google?!
"On November 18, 2009 Syabas, makers of the award-winning Popcorn Hour product line, uploaded a message to their Media Service Portal that said, “As of Wednesday, December 2, 2009, YouTube will no longer be available to Popcorn Hour users.”

Please understand that this is neither a technical glitch nor a decision the company has voluntarily made. To be clear, Google has changed YouTube’s terms of service to exclude Set Top Boxes and other devices, and, as a result, Syabas has been asked to remove the content from their platform. We are working diligently with Google/YouTube to restore the service in the future.

What happened? Why has it been removed?

When Syabas first launched YouTube in 2008 on the Popcorn Hour platform, the company executed an agreement with YouTube that allowed it access to YouTube’s application programming interfaces (APIs). Using the company’s Media Service Portal, Syabas developed a unique application that brought YouTube content to the Popcorn Hour in a way that was easy to navigate using the device’s remote control. However, YouTube has always retained the right to change its terms of service in the future should it ever wish to do so. As a result of Google’s decision, Syabas is no longer allowed to access YouTube through its APIs. To be clear, Syabas is not being singled out. With the exception of a few strategic partners Google has chosen to work with, the company has informed Syabas they are asking all over-the-top device makers that are currently connecting to YouTube content through its APIs to take down the service.

I’ve written about this when we first heard rumors that this was coming in a previous post (http://digital.limberis.com/2009/06/now-...mer.html). Recently, when Syabas was contacted by YouTube regarding the use of their service, the company tried to negotiate with them to avoid disrupting the service. Unfortunately, Syabas was not successful in this effort. Are there other content services you would like to see us provide as an alternative to YouTube?"

What do you think? May WDTV, Xtreamer, AC.Ryan and others, lose that feature?

So YouTube wants brands to stop making their own interface and use the default YouTube interface in which they decide what content is shown? Not that I mind as i hardly use YouTube on the player, but if this is the case... then YouTube will stay on players and cause me some confusion...

We will follow the news and see what comes up...
Thx Hijack/Afrsa for the Info and hope its useful for people who need/want Youtube to continue or on there players..

Think like google. How to you make money out of click-through advertising on YouTube if viewers can't see the ads ?

Follow the money...

Oh my. No Youtube on my TV any more. I'm crying inside, no really. I must have used it, erm, many times since I found I had the capability of viewing "interactive media content directly downloaded from the internet". My particular favourite was the woman complaining about twitter and deciding to quit using it, possibly contested to first place in my Youtube hall of fame, by the same woman complaining about her lack of twitter and deciding to rejoin it. God only knows whether there's a third installment!

I have no idea what I'd do if they stopped streaming Eurosport too.

If you catch a HD youtube video, you'll find it's actually very watchable, surprised me

while i never used it i cant ignore the fact that youtube is very handy.

With 1080p a lot of customers i talk to use something like KODAK Zi8 HD Pocket Video Camera 1080p to upload to youtube this keeps the hassle of storing and backing up the movies out of your life.

Also for a lot of UK viewers getting Iplayer etc working on media streamers would be great - well channel 4 (and more) are showing full shows on youtube so this is something we will be missing out on.

i wont miss it but i feel its to early to throw it all away

But not cancelled from the WDTV Live.

Which is great as I use YouTube for music videos in HD. Both the PQ and the sound is great. Also the WDTV Live has the advantage over using a browser in that you don't get any adverts. Just the video and nothing but the video.

Regards,

Lt. Dang

IMHO this post remains meaningless until reasonably explained or substantiated.

But not enforced for Western Digtal and the WDTV Live. It seems they have a commercial agreement.
