WDTV LIVE some feedback from owners please

I am considering a WDTV live but have some questions:-

1. Has anyone used the WDTV live wireless and if so what model would I need and how reliable is the wireless connection. I had a ROKU and it failed more often than it worked.

2. Can you EASILY create music playlists of songs from different music CD's?

3. How easy is YOUTUBE to use and can it sync with your favorites set up on a pc?

4. How does WDTV compare to something like an apple tv?

Thanks in advance guys!

Posting the same post over and over again won't get you your answer any quicker.

I am not sure that you noticed but I did answer as many parts of your question as I felt qualified to do yesterday evening.

Don't hesitate to ask if you want me to do anything specific to help.

Sorry,
One further thing that I forgot to mention, the Apple TV has a max output of 1080i or 720p, whereas WD Live is 1080p at 24/25/50/60. The biggest problem with Apple TV is that you are really limited to content that you buy from iTunes (albeit via AppleTV). The problem for me is what to do with a vast DVD, HD-DVD and BluRay collection. Thus I am using the WD Live.

Ian

P.S. Youtube favourites seems to be fully implemented according to the manual.

To be honest I haven't messed about with it too much to try to get it working, but when I log into my youtube account via the WDTV live it doesn't give me access to any of my videos or favourites.

I can only answer question 1, if you are using standard wireless i.e. wireless g/54mbps, it will not be able to stream 720p and upwards, very well, if at all.

If you can hard wire, either directly to the router or via homeplugs, the speed difference will be very noticeable.

You can only make the WDTV Live wireless by adding a wireless usb dongle, but as I said before, hard wiring is the best and fastest option.

Your favourites are maintained by youtube ... The WDTV Live can access them easily, you can also add favourites from the WDTV itself

Everything works fine except one disappointing flaw ... There is no provision for viewing your subscriptions which imho should be a fundamental.

Looking at the manual it does say that it supports .PLS playlists for MP3 music. You navigate to the playlist and select it.

I have used a bunch of Devolo homeplug networking connections and for simple implementations they can work reliabley but very slowly (and these are the 200Mb/s units). I had so many problems with them occasionally deciding to get DNS from a different PC in the network and causing connectivity mayhem. I eventually cracked and ripped them out and got the cable guys in to add a further 8 hardwired points. They are not particularly low cost either, so at this stage I would probably go for really good wireless with high quality antennas.
