Software to convert DVD to network hard drive

Looking for some software that will convert DVDs over to my network hard drive?
I haven't got a streamer at the moment due to funds but got a 360 to try on

I want the file to work on any wireless network streamer. I would like to keep the picture quailty and sound but want to get rid of any menus and keep the film only

Sorry it's long winded

Thanks newpersn

Re: Software to convert DVD to network hard drive

MakeMKV is what you want once you get a streamer with MKV container support. I would suggest purchasing a WDTV Live as a media player though you'll have to get the optional wireless adapter for it or get something like an Airport Express to convert the ethernet to WiFi.

MakeMKV retains original video and audio, chapter data, etc. and just select the main movie to rip it to a single MKV file.

The problem for you is the Xbox 360 only supports two formats of note
* Xvid video in AVI with MP3 or AC3 audio
* H.264 video in MP4 with AAC-LC stereo audio

It does not support MPEG-2 in MKV with AC3 audio which is what is generated by MakeMKV.

In order for videos to play on the 360 you must convert them into one of those formats, XviD4PSP (XviD & x264), Ripbot264 (x264) or Handbrake (x264).

Ok what software can I use? I'm trying stuff out on net and it's taking hours to do 1 DVD (just the movie)

I should really look in to getting a media streamer

Re: Software to convert DVD to network hard drive

If you want to go for XviD (AVI) then the easiest way is to use DVDShrink to rip the DVD, and AutoGK to convert to AVI.

In DVDShrink, you can choose to backup the whole disc, or re-author and keep just the main movie. YOu can also choose to compress to a certain filesize, or no compression at all (most DVD's the film will be about 5gb) You can also choose what audiotrack you want, being 2ch DD or 6ch DD/DTS, etc

Then AutoGK will take the film you've just ripped, and convert it into one AVI file, complete with multichannel DD/DTS audiotrack

A typical DVD can take between 20-40mins to rip, dependant on your PC speed, and to convert does take a long time - typically 4hrs! I usually rip a bunch of films to the HDD, then queue them up in AutoGK and let it batch convert overnight!

Hi,

Hi I have ripped all my DVD's, so i can offer some advice. I use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD then I use AutoGK to convert the DVD to AVI to play on my xBox, Linksys media streamer and also my laptop, It works like a dream.

If you use the correct setting on Windows XP you can get it to auto rip the DVD when inserted into the DVD drive, it will rip onto the PC without menu's and extras.

Mine rips a dvd in anything from 10 mins to 30 mins, then once it is done I use AutoGK to convert the DVD to AVI what is done in 20 to 40 mins ...

The films are stored on my WD 1TB World Book, and using Twonky Media it streams perfect without any trouble at all.

Job done ...

The three programs I linked to are encoders that convert to XviD or x264 video codecs, they all have an Xbox 360 profile.

You need to decrypt the DVD to the hard drive first of course DVDFab is free though Slysoft AnyDVD works best as it can operate in background.

Converting into another video format takes time, it depends on how fast your CPU is, if you are using generic software these aren't really very well optimized.

If you want to convert to XviD install XviD4PSP select AVI as container then select XviD turbo profile and load in your DVD then encode.

If you want to convert to x264 in XviD4PSP select MP4 as the container then select CQ18Turbo as the x264 profile and audio should be AAC-LC then load in your DVD and encode it.

XviD4PSP and Ripbot264 are both multi-threaded so you can use multiple CPU cores. I recommend having ffdshow-tryouts installed to act as media decoder for those encoders.

Handbrake works differently as codecs to decode video are baked into it.
