Popcorn Hour A110 Sound problems

Recently purchased a PCH A110 and have the set up as follows:

Pioneer TV HDMI -> PCH & Sony DAV SC-6 -> Optical to PCH Using:

HDMI Audio OFF
5.1 selected.
DTS - Digital RAW
AC3 - Digital RAW
AAC - Analogue PCM
WMA - Analogue PCM

My problem is the sound crackling sometimes and also loss for 1/100th second in addition when there's a "dramatic scene" the sound also gets distorted. I have also tried .mkv files that haven't been "created" with say DTS etc and they are the worse for audio playback.

I'm also getting terrible sound quality from music folder where I have stored mp3's.

Can anyone help?

try going direct to the TV via hdmi does that fix anything? it will help see where the problem is.

I've got an old Pioneer Plasma which has like a media box (away from telly) where all the leads go (HDMI) of which I'm currently putting the cable straight to the PCH
