Hi All

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, and mods feel free to move as you see fit!

I have an Apple TV, and am looking for an alternative source of movies, if they are not yet available on the iTunes store, or if they are old movies which the iTunes store just doesn't carry.

I am not so bothered about HD video, but Dolby Digital sound is important to me.

Any advice? Or are there better alternatives to Apple TV now, which have access to other non-apple libraries, etc?

PS. I also have a PS3 and an XBOX 360 - just incase this gives me any options

i dont think you will get alot of replies.

most users on here want to access the films/tv shows they have all over the house without worrying about moving discs. so the process is, buy discs, put discs on server, access them all over the house. so most users will purchase their films on disc, not from the internet. this is the reason you might not get many answers.

If you buy the original DVD you can convert it using Handbrake into an x264 video in a m4v container with dolby digital 5.1 audio.

Only Apple hardware like the ATV support this m4v x264/ac3 5.1 combo.

Handbrake comes with an AppleTV profile and just use the constant quality mode of 70% for very good image quality.

iTunes will accept the files and the ATV will play them.

Also you'd run into the problem of the ATV having very limited media support, I dont even know of any online stores that sell drm-free films and the videos would have to be compatible with iTunes in the first place.
