WDTV couple of questions

Ok ive found a thread on here thats pages long ive started reading it but to speed things up ive a few questions if a may.

There are 2 types i believe the newer being the 'live' version.

1,now ive found a thread on the DTS downmixing,,i dont understand that really,,so in easy if i download a video file with DTS will the sound come through my Tv or has it to be plugged into a theatre system? and will both models read DTS if they can.

2,will it read from an external drive that has NTFS file system.

3,Are the USB ports powered ones.

4,are they that good

Re: WDTV couple of questions

1. The WDTV will require an external decoder (AV receiver) to play DTS. Your TV will NOT output sound through it's speakers.
The WDTV Live will decode the DTS and output it as stereo, so no external decoder is required. Your TV will output sound through it's speakers.

2.Yes, it reads NTFS.

3.Yes, they do provide power but only enough to power your average portable 2.5" external drive. Disks of 320GB appear to work OK.

4. YES

Re: WDTV couple of questions

A few opinions regarding the WDTV.
I have owned this for some time now and am quite familiar with it.
At all times bear in mind you have paid less than £70 for this.
It is not particularly responsive, the remote is awful and some of the functions are quite crude (FFW/FRW).
HDMI ports do not power down, along with BT701 issues (apparently an issue with all devices using this chipset).
HD audio is not an option.
It is not really a tinkerers machine, or at least others require more tinkerering.

However, if you are after fuss-free playback of pretty much all medium-high profile file formats etc then it really is a fantastic little box. I have spent more than i care to think about on high-end DVD players for over a decade. When i watch piddling 2Gb file containing a 720p rip from BR, for me it is difficult to take high-end DVD playback seriously.
If you are connecting this to a large TV and only really require "play" and "stop" then i believe this box (and its ilk) has the same bang-for-buck potential as a half decent subwoofer has to a non-subwoofer HT.
My 68 year old father has one of these and really understands the value of the thing.

Re: WDTV couple of questions

that is excellent information there i really appreciate the response.

the wdtv live sounds more like option as i notice a lot of the high def files have DTS know.

i almost for forgot i assume it'll play audio, ive loads of mp3 files,,which i play through the 360 but it may sound like a small problem but you can't skip ffw/rww on the xbox music player..so will this do that?

thanks again

Re: WDTV couple of questions

Yes, it is happy with many audio variants. I actually like the both the manner and nature of the info displayed in the audio player if the meta-data is present.
The unit will >> and <<, but its miniscule X range and its non-hurried approach make precision skipping futile.

Re: WDTV couple of questions

Just picked mine up from ebay for just over £30.

Have to say, I'm very impressed. Just plugged in a small 90G portable drive and was up and running.

All my various media files play without any configuration needed. I have an Amp and the DTS/5.1 sound was perfect.

Just now need to save for a bigger drive.

Please note that there is an UPGRADED WDTV being sold by WD.
It uses the same enhanced chipset as the WDTV Live so it is just as fast and feature rich but it does not have the Live's networking ability.

Might be worth looking for the new model and not the old version of the WDTV?

Hope this is helpful.

Regards,

Lt. Dang

The bars are meant to be there and unless your plasma is 8 years old and there won't be image retention.

Why spend all this money just to ruin how the film is supposed to look.

Re: WDTV couple of questions

Hey guys just want to make sure somethings before I purchase the WDTV Live. So for example I have a BR rip which means it contains DTS audio rite?,
so the only way to get the surround sound of this movie its with an amp with DTS decoder? What happens if I dont have a home theater yet, would I still get stereo sound threw my TV.. I believe the word is downmixing.

What exactly is the difference between WDTV and Live other then the Ethernet port. and before I forget. WDTV live has any online feature like Youtube or Internet radio? and those it support any apps like yamj for movies library?

I would really appreciate the help

Buy the newer version of the WDTV which, like the Live, now incorporates DTS downmix for your TV.

But even the new WDTV does not incorporate any online functions precisely because it has no ethernet port.

Hey thank you for your help but how would I know which is the new model. By the way I was leaning more towards the WDTV Live for the Ethernet Port Im thinking of buying a couple of HDD and make it has Raid 0 just to store my media and dedicate those hard drives to the WDTV Live
