Re: nas box suggestions

I can report back very positively about my ReadyNAS Duo. Which streams easily via the PS3.

Re: nas box suggestions

I recently purchased a Netgear Duo and it is streaming to my PS3 no problem at all.

Would definitely recommend it.

Re: nas box suggestions

I've been using the Synology Disk Station, streams to my PS3/Xbox 360 with no issue. The Disk Station Manager GUI is awesome, makes my life and clients life easier to manage the box.

readynas here - if nothing else you get a 5 year warranty with 24 hour swap out, rather than a 1 year one

Re: nas box suggestions

I wonder if any of you can recommend me a product for very specific requirements.

-Gigabit Ethernet
-4TB running in RAID1
-Support for the .mkv container (I have a lot of (legal) 720p HD content in this container, currently I'm having to use ps3mediaserver running on my PC to play these on my PS3, not an ideal solution)
-Support for Squeezebox duet
-Support for BitTorrent

Nope. I want to mirror the data, RAID0 doesn't do that.

well most NAS do that - you dont need them to support MKVs, thats for the client

out of the box, then a Readynas comes with Squeezecentre and bittorrent and works great

Re: nas box suggestions

Seems he is using the PS3 as client and his pc to convert the mkv to be playable on the PS3.

So in short - no NAS currently does that - least not that i am aware.

Re: nas box suggestions

no NAS does what you want on the fly as an automated process

so youd convert any movies into whichever format you need for your client - the PS3

then put them on your NAS, and stream away

as for which ReadyNAS - its just down to budget really - a 2 bay DUO will do all of the above, the other models just add drives and get faster as you go up the product range

Re: nas box suggestions

Ok thanks. What do you mean by faster? Network speed? Hard drive read/write speeds?

I've been looking at those ReadyNAS Duo's actually. So I could just stick 2 of these in it?
2TB Western Digital WD20EADS Caviar Green, SATA 3Gb/s, IntelliPower, 32MB Cache, NCQ - Scan.co.uk
Or would you suggest a different hard drive?

I think Dabs have them for £153, includes a free 500gb hard drive you have to send off for.

bit late now, but yes, read/write speeds get faster the higher you go up the range, and network ports double, so you can have 2Gbps instead of 1Gbps connections ...the products that these come on start at over £600 though
