Tragic end to a great footballer's career

BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | A | Aston Villa | Laursen applauded at news conference

Absolutely gutted.

IMO the best defender Villa have had since Paul McGrath and easily one of the top 5 defenders in the Premier League as well.

Me too.

It is tragic but it could be a lot worse, I'm sure he'll have a nice little wad of cash to fall back on to ease the tragicness.

Thread title aside, it's bad news for Villa - gonna have to spend big to fill a Laursen sized chasm over the summer. The heart and soul of the team, look at performances since his injury.

He had a good innings.....sorry wrong sport!

I'd be interested to see the insurance payouts for these sorts of scenarios.

Him and Ledley King obviously share that title when they're in and out of fitness.

Re: Tragic end to a great footballer's career

Bit of a dramatic title but it is sad to see him go as he seemed a stand up guy and when fit was a great defender (it is no coincidence that his absence has coincided with villa losing form)

Villa will need to spend big to replace him because Cuellar is not up to scratch IMHO. Letting go of Gary Cahill now looks like a real mistake given his excellent form (and comparatively low cost at £5m).

Re: Tragic end to a great footballer's career

Good player and no doubt a loss to Villa. Hardly tragic though. He ain't going to be living on the bread line or streets of Birmingham.

A tragic loss, in sentimental terms, would be something like Marc Vivien Foe.

It was said at the time by many people, that selling Cahill to us wasn't too clever, as Laursens injury problems had been known for a while.

We could let you have him back for about 20million, if you want!
