Shearer To Manage Newcastle Until End Of Season

Breaking news on SKY that Shearer is to manage the Toon until end of season.

Easy option me thinks as he can't fail. If he avoids relegation he's a hero, if they don't he can walk away as it was only a short term contract !!

Still surprised he didn't stick with his BBC contract though.

Re: Shearer To Manage Newcastle Until End Of Season

I was going to post in the relegation thread about the BBC story...

Even better news. Shearer is not boring the nation on MOTD and Newcastle go down

Re: Shearer To Manage Newcastle Until End Of Season

Shearer, Shearer, Shearer ! Welcome back !

It must be my birthday or something cause this is the best news i've had all year !! Hopefully he'll be able to put a little fighting spirit into the team to cary us to safety then look to cut out the deadwood and attract some good, young players for next season ! Let's hope Ashley back's him in the wayhe was going to when he brought Keegan in !

Toon, Toon, Black & White Army

Sure, why not just get Jamie Redknapp to replace him at the BBC and he can bore us all to tears

Hey LFC,

Let's leave the talk about relegation to other teams. More importantly are you still conceding the premiership to us or have you finally seen the light and realised that your drought could be over ??

Re: Shearer To Manage Newcastle Until End Of Season

They're a bit early with the April's Fool aren't they?

I think Ashley needs to grow some balls and do what is actually best for the club rather than pandering to the fans and trying to win brownie points.

Is a man with zero mangerial experience what Newcastle need in their hour of need?

I was thinking the same myself. Mind you Shearer is really in a no lose situation here I think, because a lot of people expect Newcastle to go down, so if he manages to pox his way out of it he'll be a hero

Re: Shearer To Manage Newcastle Until End Of Season

just appeared on Shearer's Wiki entry:
On the 1st of April 2009 (April Fools Day) he was thought to have become manager of Newcastle FC in what turns out to be a nasty prank by the print media at the expense of the long suffering Geordie fans.

though he appears on Newcastle's Wiki entry as current manager

5 Live's 9-10am phone in is supposed to be about the news. Still not convinced myself.

Theres a lot of newcastle haters in here! in my opinion anythings gotta be better than hughton and calderwood, we seemed to be going only one way with those two at the helm.

Does anyone else think that it's just a ploy to get the fans to renew their season tickets even if they do go down ?

Well we all need that official Newcastle statement first as I am still mindful of the date

Moreso as Ian Dowie is being mentioned as well

@ ed_mcl, the second question

Well if that's the case then as a Boro fan I wholeheartedly agree. I'm glad that one of our main relegation rivals has gone and employed a complete novice to try and guide them out of their sticky situation.

Fair play to him if he pulls it off, but I'd like to see him try and leave at the end of the season if he does. The expectant Geordies hailing their new messiah will no doubt be lining the streets of Newcastle with banners demanding he stay.

Re: Shearer To Manage Newcastle Until End Of Season

I'll not offer him good luck as I never actually found him a good personality or having any interest in whether Newcastle stay up or not, but fair play to him for stepping in at such a difficult time.

I always thought in the past that he avoided the manager's job at the club as there was a high probability that it would totally ruin his hero status in the town.

But at least he has balls. I'm just not sure if he can turn it around. The team is awful, and I am not sure if it has the potential to save itself. Time will tell.

Re: Shearer To Manage Newcastle Until End Of Season

Depends on the state of the team when he moves in and watches them on the training pitch. There isn't exactly a huge squad, or one full of quality

For example Owen these days is so fragile, Loverkrands gets starts ahead of him - purely because at least he can last 90min (conveniently forgotten by the press when its internationals, but miraculously recalled in time for league fixtures)

Re: Shearer To Manage Newcastle Until End Of Season

As a Newcastle fan, this (if true) can only be good news. The team need some life injected into them - the team has being going from bad to worse over recent seasons.

We were talking about Newcastle's relegation battle at work today with the 'annoucement' of Shearers appointment, and at least 3 people said 'We wont get relegated. Newcastle are too big a club to go down'. Too many of the Geordie fans have this attitude - they expect great things from a below par team. If Shearer does come in for the final 8 games, he will get the fans behind him and a packed St James (although the turnouts are usualy very good anyway). With a good crowd behind the team, hopefully we can pull ourselves out of the fight.

Re: Shearer To Manage Newcastle Until End Of Season

Good to see this has been confirmed

Shearer says he is definitley only going to be doing the job for 8 weeks, no matter how they finish in the league. He will be returning to MOTD next year.

There's many points to be won and lost yet, and the thing in Newcastle's favour is the fact that there are a few other teams as bad as them at the bottom.

He could find one of Kevin Keegans old coaching manuals left behind and quit after a couple of games if things don't go well
