There is only one manager that I can think of who built his career like that, and it's Martin O'Neill. I've followed his career from Wycombe, Leicester, Celtic and now Villa.
The thing that sets O'Neill apart from the rest is that he will only take a job on his terms, and if he feels that he can work within the structure of the club. When he was being mooted for the Tottenham job a while back, there wasn't a hope that he would take it because of the boardroom setup at Spurs, nor would he take the Liverpool job while Rick Parry is there.
Other's, like Tony Adams, can't believe their luck when offered a huge contract and jump in both feet first. No doubt Adams will be in the frame for the next managerial job that comes along, and if offered it, he'll be back on the merry go round again.
