I'm a City fan and am very surprised that United's treble winning team of 1999 aren't in or even of their double winning teams either ....... makes a mockery of it.

Really this poll should only be open to the over eighties as no-one younger would have first hand experience of 1940 team

Even I'm not that old

re: Poll for the greatest ever 10 Football Club sides:

couple of strange choices in there i think.

porto 2004? didn't think they played great football which was beautiful to watch!! some might say they dived and cheated their way to euro victory, although they did win it which is a big achievement. (all be it down to a mistake by a linesman at old trafford and they wouldn't have made the final!)

dortmund 97? another strange one for me. i went to both the games against utd and thought they weren't outstanding but just worked hard and were good on the break. sammer and kohler were top class centre halves and paul lambert was probably the most underated footballer in the world at the time, but to call them one of the 10 best club sides ever is a bit much.

my vote would be for either the great milan team or the ajax team that won the champs league in 95. i also don't think that list is complete without the united treble winning team. love them or hate them, that is probably one of the greatest achievements in world football!!

re: Poll for the greatest ever 10 Football Club sides:

For me.

1. Milan 1989-90
2. Real Madrid 1956-60
3. River Plate 1940s (especially late '40s) although this was a toss up with the Torino team of the same period (devastated by the Superga disaster)

According to your profile you're only 26 so what experience do you have of any of the three teams that you've picked

Didn't realise that this was a poll of the greatest team you've seen play in which case I'd still pick Milan (ok I only saw them on TV)!!! Whilst books/newsreel footage etc isn't as good as seeing the team I still feel you can make a judgement.

I've been listening to an excellent audiobook by Niall Ferguson in the car recently about conflict in the Twentieth Century he was (according to google) born in 1964 is he not allowed to express opinions on anything pre say 1970? I believe you can be a historian (allbeit very amateur in my case) of football just like any other subject. If not history would be a much narrower subject if you exclude anything beyond your own lifetime.

I don't think you need to have been around to know about the merits of say Real in the early days of the European Cup! Otherwise this poll is irrelevant unless someone like Brian Glanville is a member of AVF.

re: Poll for the greatest ever 10 Football Club sides:

Shame about the Man Utd omissions, or perhaps they were seen as flukes?...
Anyway, I'd put late eighties/early ninties Milan firmly at No.1, as they were the last team that truly dominated European club football for a number of years.

Me being mid-thirties I'm probably too young to remember anything from the great Real Madrid and Torino sides.

another vote for Man Utd 98/99, absolutely unbelievable that you missed them off! Won the treble playing the most stylish football you could hope to see.

And a mate just reminded me of the 'untouchable' Arsenal side of a few years back, no mention of them either?

I am obviously too young to have seen them play but I would have cast a vote for the Man Utd team of 1956-57 (The Busby Babes). I saw videos of them when I was a kid and they were amazing.

Going from the list, I guess I choose the Milan 1990 team.

Some very very odd choices for the list however, Porto 2004?

re: Poll for the greatest ever 10 Football Club sides:

Although the Man Utd team of 98-99 were a good team. I never thought they were great. The measure of a good team is how often they retain the competition IMO.

The Man Utd team of the 50's although supposedly supremely talented is looked back on with tragic bias due to the sad circumstances of their demise. They would have had to have gone somewhat to beat the Madrid team of that era that dominated Europe.

Ajax made two finals back to back in the mid 90's and I feel that team could have dominated Europe but were decimated by the Bosman ruling. I can remember a comment attributed to an Ajax chairman stating he would have shot Bosman if he walked into his Board Room. They lost about 25 players over a short period after Bosman. No one knows how good that team could have been for a few years.

I have not seen a better team than the Milan teams of the late 80's early 90's. Players of the calibre of Gullit, Rikjaard, Van Basten, Baresi, Maldini, this team were able to dismantle other quality teams with a style and ruthlessness that I have not seen since. I'm not old enough to have watched the Madrid 60's in their heyday.

Man Utd 1989-90, why are they in this list???????

I'm a Utd fan but this was not an exceptional team, it only won the 1990FA Cup, although that was the catalyst for everything since if you must have more than one Utd side in there why not the Mid 1990s side (Cantona et al), the 1969 side with Best, Law an Charlton or even the current double wnning side!!

personally i voted for the 1999 treble winning side as they not only won the treble that season but went on to win three premier leagues in a row. And this was also the peak years for the Fergie Fledglings.

I put the team in as I was asked to.

However you are quite right and if we ever have a thread asking about the relative merits of the magnificent Australian team of the mid noughties and the all conquering West Indians of a generation earlier I will be an enthusiastic and knowledgeable contributor.

I did used to be a great footie fan but I started to fall out of love with the game when it was taken over by Sky and became 24/7 which co-incided with the huge growth in footie gossip.

One of my more endearing memories is of my eldest son being born at home in the next room whilst I watched Manchester United winning the European Cup for the first time on the TV. He very kindly waited until fifteen minutes after the full time whistle had elapsed before making his entrance into the world - but that's another story

Re: Poll for the greatest ever 10 Football Club sides:

Certainly the Milan side of Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard were the best I've ever seen, and I say that as a Liverpool fan, but also a Serie A fan. It's a shame they never played the Liverpool side of Rush, Barnes and Beardsley (but lets not let the thread degenerate into a discussion on why).

The Madrid side of the 60s were widely acknowledged to be the 'greatest' ever, but how much of that was because there was little opposition, and because they played a really good game in Glasgow in full view of local media. And how much help did they get from Franco ?

From a British point of view, I think the Liverpool side of 78-79 were as invincible as it got, in an era that was much more competitive than the Premiership years.

Was just reading through this thread for the 1st time & all I could think about was that side under Dalglish. Had Europe been an option, & they'd avoided the two unlucky results against Wimbledon (88 FA Cup) & Arsenal (89 League) I'm sure they would've dominated even more.

Liverpool 87-90, one of the greatest teams ever & only 2 games away from the double double (or double treble once you add ole big ears)

Voted for the Liverpool option. Agree with the comments on the 87 Liverpool team. Would of loved to have seen them take on some of Europes big teams.

How you could leave out the FIRST British & Non-Latin team to win the European Cup with a team all born within 30 miles of Glasgow beggars belief
