Tbh RMCF, looking at some of the figures being bandied about, £70 million for Ronaldo, more than £150,000 a week for Lampard, go or stay, and you realise football is once again heading for a big fall.
This sort of nonsense breaks out cyclically, in the late 60's early 70's, late 70's early 80's we had periods where wages and transfer fees went nuts. The difference is now, is thanks Splatter and the poxy Bosmann ruling the players not only have the 'nap hand' they have the whole deck and it's gone on for much longer than usual. Has that though, been aided by external forces?
Even football, as the crash in fee's in the mid 70's, and the crash in both fee's and wages in the 80's showed, cannot buck international economic trends. The game has managed to resist common sense in no small part due to the economy in the Western world being buoyant for so long. But, we are told, a major recession is looming, and unless football gets a grip on spiralling wages and ludicrous transfer fee's, and starts getting it's house in order, that house may be blown in by the inevitable drop off in gates, and greatly reduced take up of Sky boxes, possibly even a tail off in their subscriptions, though with the modern obsession with the square sludge pump I suspect that even as people are re-possessed the Sky box will be the last thing removed from their property............
Whatever happens, with wage bills as bloated as they are, the last thing clubs can afford right now is an economic meltdown. They aren't exactly in a position to ride it out, as even a small decrease in gates, a decline in sales of 'spin offs' and a decline in Sky's revenue could be catastrophic.
I wait now of course for all the nay sayers.
But then the same people said the same things in the 70's and 80's.
