How would the English react if Murray won Wimbledon?

I think it would go with little fanfare in England, the English already seem to bear a grudge against him because he's Scottish and they somehow percieve him as Anti-English.

Re: How would the English react if Murray won Wimbledon?

That he would support any team bar England?

That's the same response that 9/10 Scots would give you to that question, including me ... the truth is that probably only 2/10 Scots (if you're lucky) would not be making that comment tongue in cheek.

And guess what 9/10 English would support any team but Scotland in the World Cup but that wouldn't stop us supporting an English tennis player as British if he was doing well.

Even I will admit to supporting England in the WC when it comes right down to it but why shouldn't we make these kind of comments?
They have been part and parcel of the rivalry between the two nations since the beginnings of football. Have we turned into a nation of overly sensitive pansies who can't take a good ribbing?

It isn't just the English. I've got a lot of Welsh mates that aren't supporting him through one reason or another.

I supported Murray this evening, don't really hold a grudge against him, you just hear that he is supposed to be a bit of a ****.

I would guess that the majority of the crowd in centre court this evening were English and they seemed to be bearing no grudge, in fact they were behind him as much as I ever saw thenm behind Henman.

No doubt there are a couple of clowns who think he is anti-english because of his remark during the World Cup a couple of years ago, but I think they are really a very small minority.

Most peoples problem with him is not that hes a Scot but that he appears to be miserable all the time (Maybe the two go hand in hand ). Have no doubt it would go down very well if he won.

You are expelled from Scotland if you are anything but miserable looking. It rains 90% of time here, looking happy at any point would mark you out as clearly insane.

I think he probably won the crowd over tonight with his fight back. Still I prefer his persona to that bland mummys boy Tim Henman.

No they wouldn't. 9/10 tosspots maybe but the vast majority of Brits would support Scotland in that scenario.

Re: How would the English react if Murray won Wimbledon?

I don't blame the Scots for not supporting England, they're not obliged to.

However, most of them go the other way and actually support the teams playing against England - Murray wearing a Paraguay shirt giving plenty of reason to dislike him. I remember when Argentina knocked England out the World Cup in 1998 and the sales of Argentina shirts in Scotland was at an all time high.

If the situation had been reversed, firstly the majority of English people would not have been buying Argentinian shirts and secondly we would have been behind Scotland, irrespective of the opposition.

The fact that Murray was so vocal about supporting "anyone but England" makes the magnificent support he received at Wimbledon yesterday even more remarkable.

Having said all that, I really want him to beat Nadal when they meet ..... come on Andy.

Completely agree. I would support any "home" team, and have done.

Yeah, course they would mate, course they would and I strongly suspect Murray was set up with a loaded question by some media type "Oh I know, I'll ask Murray who he will support in the World Cup" knowing fine well what sort of answer he would give (like any Scot) and then painting him as some English hating tyrant. The English can't support a Scottish tennis player, how are they ever going to support the Scottish football team.

I like his attitude, too many nicey nicey types in sport in this country, maybe that's why we never win anything.

I dont think Murray actually wore a Paraguay shirt, dont think he even mentiuoned Paraguay, just whoever England were playing. I watched it at the time and took it as a joke, as I would expect any banter between an Englishman and a Scot.

EDIT:

"I am Scottish. I am also British. I am not anti-English, I never was... what happened was a little joke that went wrong.

"It was the time of the 2006 World Cup and England were due to play Paraguay. Tim Henman and I were being interviewed and before we started the journalist asked Tim about England's chances in the World Cup and asked me who I would be supporting.

"He was making the point that Scotland weren't there. I got the joke. I laughed. We did the interview and the last question was: 'Who will you be supporting?' Remembering our previous banter, I just said: 'Whoever England are playing, ha ha.' I had a smile on my face.

"It was obvious I was joking. It wasn't reported like that. They made up stories about me buying a Paraguay shirt, the whole thing was absolute nonsense."

Re: How would the English react if Murray won Wimbledon?

I don't see wimbledon as a nationalistic tournament. They represent themselves.
It is not like the Davis cup where they (supposedly) represent their country, and that would be a different matter.
Anyway, tennis is rubbish, and nothing gets on my nerves more than the wimbledon groupies who go for the day out and wouldn't dream of going to see any other match even if it was on their own front lawn.
So I, as an Englishman, do not support any of them in this tournament and couldn't care less who wins as long as they're the best player.

I find his dour demeanour and monotone, droning voice too irritating to listen to. He may be talented, but he needs to spend some money on voice & media coaching or he's seriously going to cut into his potential earnings. Mind you, that never stopped Beckham I suppose.

I really can't take to the guy. If he wins the tournament, then woop-de-doo frankly.

Because Tim Henman was the embodiment of personality wasn't he?

What's Henman got to do with it?

Actually I found him very monotone and somewhat inarticulate at times as well. That's why I'm surprised he's working as a co-commentator for the BBC.
