Mon, 30th Jun 2008
Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm the signing of Deco from FC Barcelona.
The Portuguese midfielder becomes our first signing under Luiz Felipe Scolari since the Brazilian's appointment as manager on June 11.
Deco, who won the Champions League and UEFA Cup with FC Porto, spoke to Chelsea TV after officially signing and said: 'It is good for me to be here and first of all I am very happy to be here.'
The former Barcelona player has further Champions League success as one of his main ambitions with Chelsea and, after playing in Euro 2008 alongside a strong Chelsea contingent, now feels the time was right to join his former national coach in west London.
'I am sure I have come at the right time to do great things and be able to help Chelsea go back to the way it was and come back to being the first one, not only in England but also to win the Champions League that has been their dream for so long.
'The Premier League is a great league and it is getting better and you can see that with the Champions League Final, where you had two English teams.
'It is great that we have so many great players here at Chelsea and it is great that there is the competition which is healthy for everybody and this just makes the team better
'To have great players in any position of the club just enhances the club.
'I know it is a new challenge but I am looking forward to it.
'I know I need a little bit of time to adapt bit but I am sure I will adapt quite well and quite fast and do my best for the team.'
You can see the full interview on Chelsea TV in the second addition of Blues News at 10pm tonight.

Looking forward to seeing him in the Prem. I like transfers like this - well known, experienced, proven pro....shame he's 30 already but has a good couple of years to go I would've thought & under a manager he knows very well..

How much did you get him for?
IMO he is a little overated, and not as good as he was a couple of seasons ago.
Not a bad buy though and a mate of Scolari i'm sure.

He won't score as many as fat Frank. He's a better provider though.

Well 1st he is 30, and i wouldnt say he is past his best. But everyone is entitled to their opinion. £8m IMO is a good price. I wouldnt want to see Lamps leave, but if he does, so be it. We've lost better players than him.
Chelsea F.C. is important to me, not individuals nor their egos. Im sure fans of other teams feel the same about their team and players.

Chelsea paid £30million for someone just 3 months short of 30 two years ago, so £8million for Deco is peanuts in comparison. £8million doesn't buy you much nowadays so to buy a player of that calibre isn't bad business at all IMO

Tony | We'll take Frank.
He was at the UEFA Cup Final with his agent as a guest of David Murray. (Am I clutching at straws here )
On topic, I think the price is good (in the current market), but I do think Deco is past his best. happy for him to prove me wrong though.

If Villa value Barry @ £18m then £8m for Deco is a steal

I do think he will need to toughen up and lose some of his histrionics if he is going to make it in the Prem though.
