Khan Vs Gomez 21st June 2008 NIA Birmingham

Manchester's Michael Gomez believes he can prove everyone in boxing wrong again when he takes on Amir Khan on Saturday.

The Predator's career has been on a downward spiral for more than three years but has resisted calls for his retirement to take on the undefeated Khan for the Commonwealth lightweight title.

And Gomez, who scored a shock victory over the previously unbeaten Alex Arthur in 2003, believes such a big fight is what he needs to focus his mind on the job.

Boxing star Amir Khan has branded former trainer Oliver Harrison "disloyal" for helping his up-coming opponent to prepare.

Olympic silver medallist Khan faces Michael Gomez in-front of a sell-out 10,000 crowd for the Commonwealth lightweight title in Birmingham on Saturday.

It is Khan's first fight since he split with Harrison two months ago, following his victory over Martin Kristjansen in April.

Khan to win this easily or will it be a tough nights work?

Re: Khan Vs Gomez 21st June 2008 NIA Birmingham

After Khan's limp start in pro boxing I thought he'd been doing quite well. This split with Harrison is the question mark though. I just don't know if Khan is going to be properly prepared for the fight.

I hope khan gets absolutely flattened.. not that i expect gomez to do this!
I dont think ive ever hated a boxer as much as khan.

Theres plenty of decent young british fighters out there who deserve the coverage he gets but they dont. Just because he won a silver medal at the olympics.

Eee it makes my blood boil it does!

Yet another small opponent for Khan and just to make sure,Gomez is also way past his best.Id like Khan to get ko'd so he will stop spouting so much rubbish but I think Gomez is a bit of a nob head as well so would be happy if there was a simultaneous KO on this occasion

Another fight that is won and lost cause of a girlie ref stopping it to soon. Khan should go for a world title next and get put on his arse he would start over again and become a better boxer for it.

I too think the ref stopped it to soon, gomez did take a lot of hits but thats the thing he "took" them.
Should have let him carry on after the flurry of hits and if he was back in that position again in that round then he should have stopped it.

Re: Khan Vs Gomez 21st June 2008 NIA Birmingham

Great fight, and ref decided during 5/6 rounds Gomez had taken too many head shots, which was about right to stop it, he was a target by then.

Khan, was not convincing, and will meet someone who will stop him.

Khan vs Naseem Hamed - if they we evenly matched, who would win?, Hamed effortlessly got direct punches on his opponents and had great leg work/speed.

Re: Khan Vs Gomez 21st June 2008 NIA Birmingham

Good fight, loads of action and was really exciting to watch. I thought that both fighters did well and Khan was certainly shaken by both the hook to the head than put him down to one knee and the body shot to his right ribs. That said Khan's hand speed was fantastic and he landed some amazing combos.

There are definite questions about Khan's defense and chin but you can't really fault his technique and hand speed. I felt that he needed to keep Gomez at arms reach more with the jab, rather than getting sucked into a scrap, allowing Gomez in on the inside. Still it made for a more entertaining spectacle that's for sure!

To be honest I don't hate Khan or Naseem Hamed and feel that it adds to the spectacle and occasion having cocky, larger than life boxers. Used to love watching the Naz fights and hopefully Khan can go on to achieve a similar level to him.

Re: Khan Vs Gomez 21st June 2008 NIA Birmingham

Most exciting few rounds I've seen in ages, both boxers going for it. Ref was probably just about right, he would've stopped it within another 30 secs anyway. Thought Khan looked pretty convincing, certainly is excellent shape. Gomez just didn't stop coming - that 8/9 punch combo he received whilst stagger backwards was straight of a Rocky movie, tough cookie that one.

Nope,it is because he is an arrogant ****** who spouts endless ******** and then does not back it up in the ring.Dont get me wrong,I think boxers have to be a bit cocky,Im a massive fan of David Haye because he gives it the charlie big potatoes then backs it up in the ring - Khan does not,he headlines shows fighting natural super featherweights who are well past their best and usually with a ko % of about 20 and still manages to get put on his ass

Warren is just trying to protect his investment for as long as possible, but it is only a matter of time before Khan has to fight someone with a decent punch and is actually his size....

Re: Khan Vs Gomez 21st June 2008 NIA Birmingham

I watched the fight at the NIA and agree with what most have said already - the ref stepped in a little early, Khan has definitely got a suspect chin, and he'll most likely get a pasting if he goes up against a world class opponent.

The undercard fights were mostly crap also and Frank Warren got by far the biggest chorus of booing when he stepped into the ring which was quality!

For my first ever trip to a boxing match I enjoyed it - and Gomez deserves respect as he was no pushover - but Khan has yet to demonstrate he's anywhere near as good as he so obviously believes he is.

dr_m

PS Ended up in the Rocket Club on Broad Street - interesting....

Yeah and then he gets knocked down by them. I really don't know where Amir Khan goes after this one. The word on the street is that his next opponent will be Gavin Rees which is probably the right step for him. He ain't ready for no Katsidis or Romanov yet. Never mind the big guns like Casa, Nate & Juan Diaz.

Did you all watch the way Pacquiao completely destroyed David Diaz on Saturday, at Khan stating that he could take him out.

KO3 Pacman or prime Hamed.
