Euro 2008 - who will be the big name after it?

So before it all starts, who do we all think is going to come out of it with his reputation on a high or higher than it already is?

- Will it be Ronaldo after his great season with Utd? Can it get any better for him?

- Will Torres bang in a bagfull?

- Will Benzema or Huntelaar show why they are being chased by all the big boys?

- Will Van the Man show he still knows where the net is?

- Will Klose be top scorer as the German machine rolls on to the final?

Well for me, I feel that Michael Ballack is going to have a great tournament (bookies feel the same as he is 2nd favourite to be UEFA Player of the Tournament). I am going to put a few quid on him to be either top scorer at 22/1, or do the double with Germany winning it too at 50/1.

Any thoughts?

Did he partner Klose for the qualifiers? I would say it will definitely be Klose + 1 anyway. The golden boy of a few years ago Podolski seems to have slipped a bit.

Anyone with Podolski backed to be leading scorer is off to a good start.

Surprised he started, it was always going to be Gomez + either Klose or Podolski, then all 3 are thrown in there.

Still think Gomes will have a huge tournament, he's pretty much the hottest striker around at the moment.

Re: Euro 2008 - who will be the big name after it?

Seeing the way the Germans lined up last night was surprising. They seem to want to shake off their boring defensive, we will take a 1-0 stance. Usually 3 up top isn't known for the German side.

I have opted for either Podolski or Benzema as top scorer, Benzema at 33-1 was too good to turn down.

After watching the opening 4 games only Portugal and Germany look any cop, but I still fancy the Dutch to do well, providing of course they get out of that horrible group.

As for the player going to make a name for himself, its Modric for me.

Re: Euro 2008 - who will be the big name after it?

I think Lampard will have a fantasic 2 weeks.

Topping up the tan and learning Italian...

On a serious note I don't think that a 'new star' will shine. Sure, some will have decent games / periods, but I think the consistent great play will be by current world stars:

Cech
Ballack
Ribery
Cesc
Benzema

etc

To be fair to the Germans, have they had that reputation for a long time? For me in recent times they have actually been fairly attacking. In my younger days I always remember Germany as a team that weren't happy with a 1-0 and would not take it easy of inferior opposition unlike likes of Italy who were happy to win 1 or 2-0. Germany would put you to the sword and feel no sympathy for you. And also, they were the only team in the last WC to play 2 men up EVERY game in this world dominated by 1 man up front. And last night was no exception, except Podolski was started in left midfield to find him a place as his form this season hasn't deserved a place up front in place of either Gomez or Klose.

France's 3 main fowards have scored 0 goals between them in their pre tournament friendlies. Perhaps they are saving themselves?

And Modric didn't look all that impressive in his 1st game. Too many misplaced passes. But I don't hold that against him because he is a quality player, as he scored in their qualifying.

Zlatan is not fully fit, and by his own admission might not last the 1st full 90 mins... He also hasn't actually scored for Sweden in a competative match since 2005

Hope he proves me wrong though, then the missus will have something to smile about (And me too ).

Most, if not all the players mentioned on here are already pretty big names, Gomez is about the only non-household name.

Yet to see a youngster we haven't really heard about previously do something amazing, the young Dutch striker could've made a massive impact though last night had his first touch effort gone in

Not sure really. I certainly know who he is, doubt the wife would, unless Chelsea made a £50million bid for him..

David Villa will be up there atm but lets wait for Zlatan Ibrahimovic's performance he is already a big name but he would certainly quash any doubters if he was to perform (Martin O'neil been one of them who claimed he was over rated and rubbish while on the bbc panel during the world cup) he doesn't play well for sweden as hasn't scored for them in nearly 3 years today would be the day to prove every doubter he is class I know he is

Ibrahimovic was the self proclaimed greatest player in the world a few years ago. I'm yet to see him deliver in the big games.

Ibrahim Afellay looked lively and nearly embarressed Buffon....given the right envirinment he could be a really good player in the future. Rafael VdV does look ready for a big move - hopefully to Chelsea.

The 'unknown' player I was most impressed with was Orlando Engelaar. He looked really assured on the ball and rarely wasted possession.

Don't rate Ibrahimovic at all myself
