Cappello's 1st England squad?????

England v Switzerland
Wednesday 6 February 2008
Wembley Stadium
Kick Off 8pm

Who does everyone think should be in Mr Cappello's first England Squad?

Will Beckham get his 100th cap? Who will be in Goal?
Finally who will captain the team?

Rob Green in goal please
I'm sure we'll see Owen and Rooney up front, hopefully the rumours about Kitson being in it are true

I reckon the bench will contain a few surprises, not sure about the 1st team. Could be anyone's guess and it is only a friendly.

It's our only game for something like 7/8 months i think, so i can see him playing an 11 he means to go in with. Hope Bentley gets a look in and Ashley Young. Would also like to see Jenas get a chance.

Not sure about goal, Green has been playing well as has Carson, but Carson still looks like he trying to catch a hot potato sometimes.

Re: Cappello 1st England squad?????

Joe Hart in goal for me, why not, he's nearly 21 - could be there for years to come & let's face it - nobody stands out as a real #1. I would attempt to build our immediate goalkeeping future around Hart, Carson & Green.

Sentiment only I would include Beckham for a 10minute cameo & then make it perfectly clear it was for that purpose only, thanks Becks, see ya.
- It is a friendly afterall, in which managers often blood youngsters, they should be allowed to put to bed the has-beens. It's a milestone he probably deserves & his inclusion would do more good than bad for the team & the manager.

Gerrard for Captain, whether that's in Terry's absense only or not - we need to give the armband to a player that will feature permanently for the foreseeable future - Form is Temporary, Class is Permanent. (I will always advocate current form being a major factor but Gerrard never dips low enough to not warrant an inclusion in any squad).

Agreed with Hunts on Jenas - it's always amazed me how he ever got selected so often before but he's hugely improved under Ramos - although his shooting boots were left at home on Sunday. Lennon too deserves a call up - also improving his all round game.

I think Lescott will get another call up.

Be interesting to see where Capello goes with fullbacks & strikers - not too much to choose from (or so we thought) & no-one really on great form either.

He hardly set the world (or his teammates) alight when he was captain for the final group games in the Euro qualifiers though did he?

Make Beckham captain for one last game, rather than rush in and chose someone who might not be in Cappello's first XI in a few months time

I have no problem with Terry being captain eventually if Capello thinks he's a permanent fixture. But he's not available next week so who else is there?

Needs to lead by example & needs to be highly experienced at all levels, - no one even comes close to Gerrard......

ps. If we're going to go down that route - Terry should never be given it again after that qualification attempt..

I see where you're coming from, but at the same time one of the most important things a new manager can do to immediately stamp his authority on a new era, is to name his team captain.

Not sure what will happen with Beckham, don't have Capello down as being very sentimental.

Re: Cappello 1st England squad?????

Beckham just needs his 100th cap, he doesn't need to start & he certainly doesn't need to start as captain.

Play your team, bring Beckham on with 20mins to go, chuck him the armband & then don't pick him again unless we really need to & he deserves to be..

Re: Cappello 1st England squad?????

Think Beckham made him own bed by going to US for big money and didn't give his England career a second thought.
Hardly trying to get himself a move to an EPL team now is he?

Not at all. JT has made more than a few errors both on and off the pitch. I disagreed with the suggestion that Gerrard should be Captain as he hardly looked like he motivated the players when given the chance in arguably the most important matches of his International career.

See, not biased at all. You should try it sometime, you might like it.

Fair enough if that's your opinion.

So who would you make the next fulltime England Captain?

made it quite clear how much i rate JT, excellent player for me but his of field activities for me count him out of being England captain. Now if you need a captain that has to motivate players who are playing for there country there is something serious wrong. They shouldn't be playing in the first place.

I'd like it to be Terry however I've a sneaky feeling it'll go to Rio Ferdinand.

Absolutely agree with that. I've posted before that I disagree with players being paid to represent their country. IMHO, a vast number of the players need a good kick up the backside and their places given to players who would give their all to represent their country. After all, it is the highest accolade of a playing career is it not?

Ouch! Farbehind is a good example of the malaise that's hit England teams so hard as far back as the early 70's. Too often players are picked on the basis of who they are playing for, rather than how they are playing. It's a good job the media and football establishment wasn't picking the side in 1966. Otherwise Ball, Cohen, Banks, Jackie Charlton, and probably even the West Ham trio wouldn't have played as none of them were playing for the 'big clubs' at that time.

I just hope Cappello's man enough to pick on merit - not on what he's pressured to choose.

I'm still at a loss as to why everyone wants Beckham back? He didn't look that great even in his last game? Never mind without matches under his belt!

I think people are just thinking - give him his bloody 100th cap & we can all get on with it... Don't think anyone has actually selected him for footballing reasons... I don't really care either way, it would be a sensible move by the manager (for all the stick he'll get from the press) to just chuck him on for a few farewell minutes at the end...but that's about it.

At least when he put's on the England shirt you can see it mean's something to him, not so sure about the rest of our midfield, plus he is still able to cross a ball with pin point accuracy, something that the rest sadly lack the ability to do.

If he is fit (and he say's he is) I would pick him and keep him provided he plays well enough.

If he is fit (and he say's he is) I would pick him and keep him provided he plays well enough.
Well, he didn't do to much of that in the Croatia game. Yes, he gives 100%, but then a plastic rabbit with duracell batteries in it could keep going for 90 minutes. However, it wouldn't contribute that much would it?

Agree DJT. If we have to play him, give him a bench seat, and then give him a jackal (or were spitting image right with the pigs?) pleasing 100th cap and have done with it.

However, as above, this is what worries me. Should, what we hope will be a manager who's his 'own man', begin his career by playing a guy who has no match fitness just to please the media?

Start as you mean to go on I say.

He was a sub to start and when he did come on after the break he set up Crouch to score, so he did more in the Croatia game in 45mins than most who were on for the full 90mins
