Manual vs Motorised Treadmill?

Hi,
My brother has agrophobia so cannot go running outdoors.
He is a big old unit (6 feet 4 and 16 stones). Problem is he also dislikes crowds of people so refuses to go to a gym.

He is however keen to get fit so I've sold him on the idea of a treadmill.
My issue is - which kind of treadmill to buy him?
There is a large discrepancy in price from a manual one http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...ETREADMILL.htm to a motorised one http://www.argos-sports.co.uk/mall/p.../as9169/132510

Does anyone out there own a treadmill? In your opinion it worth paying so much extra just for a motorised version?
Are manual ones impossible to use effectively do you reckon?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
(There is no way he will go outside or join a gym so please dont suggest therapy etc for his conditions as he has been there and done that.)

Cheers,
Clank

Re: Manual vs Motorised Treadmill?

Hi

Whats good for the goose isn't always good for the gande..

We have a motorised treadmill and it's really good, can programme it to suit our level of fitness (or not) and take things at our own pace, it even tilts up and down to simulate hills, adds extra tension to give you a good workout etc.

Would think you should check out gym equipment shops etc for a good one at a good price rather than Argos.

Good luck

Andy

Re: Manual vs Motorised Treadmill?

It's worth paying up for a proper machine.

The cheaper ones won't take his weight too well, and are just not comfortable or fun to use - they don't run smoothly, for a start, and whilst some will tell you computer readouts are unnecessary, they do give motivational feedback to the user.

There's always a brisk market in second hand treadmills - so go for a quality model, second-hand if needs be...
