Campbell calls for abuse to stop

Sol Campbell says verbal abuse towards footballers and managers has spiralled out of control and it is time for the authorities to start taking action.
Campbell says he has come under fire himself while Sir Alex Ferguson, Harry Redknapp and Avram Grant have all complained about crowd behaviour.

"It's out of hand now," the Portsmouth and England defender told BBC Radio 4.

"We can all take the booing or light banter, but when it gets to the realms of verbal abuse it's a bridge too far."

Re: Campbell calls for abuse to stop

When I do hear some of the stuff that people shout, even coming from the adults in the family enclosure's at football grounds it does sadden me that people feel the need to abuse players in this way. Banter is one thing, verbal abusive is very unpleasent.

Nobody no matter what you earn or who you are should be subjected to any abuse, physical or verbal. This is why I would also like player's/Manager's stop surrounding or abusing the referee whenever they don't like a decision as it should work both ways.

Re: Campbell calls for abuse to stop

Tbh, in this day and age, you can see his point. We don't abuse people like we do at football in other walks of life, so why carry on doing it during games?

However;

a) When a bloke is earning more in a year than most of us will in a lifetime, I can understand people getting a little, erm', 'shirty' nowadays, when perhaps once it would have been just 'banter'.

b) I can see some people will object to Campbells comments, saying it's just tough tbh, as that's part and parcel of the game.

c) and at the same time I can see others saying this is yet another example of over paid ponces whining when people get fed up with them exposing their limited talents which cost them £45 to watch!

Agree Simon, the players themselves hardly set a good example do they? I seem to recall a certain incident in the recent WC final, that due to abusive remarks resulted in an appallying assault on the player who made them - in front of millions. The result? A sending off. However, had someone called my mother (or was it sister?) that in a pub, and I'd stuck one on them, I'd be court.

I know that they get a lot of abuse, but for £100K per week they can shout anything they want about me, my family etc.

"I know some people may be a little bit disgruntled at how I left certain clubs. I totally understand that."

Oh he understands that as he lied about wanting to sign a new contract at the club he was captain of, and made sure all the money the club would have received went into his and Sky Andrews pockets, that the abuse he receives is just... I'm glad it's getting to him

Re: Campbell calls for abuse to stop

The point is that people don't consider "celebrities" (my god how I hate that word) as real people. They are put up on pedastals and consider them different from the rest of us.

IMO the media and the ******** heat magazine culture is partly to blame for constantly banging on about these kind of people as if they were demi-gods.

People need to realise that Sol Campbell, Alex Ferguson etc are just normal people like everyone else with normal feelings and emotions etc.

Sorry Games, I would never describe the red nosed burglar as 'normal'.

Re: Campbell calls for abuse to stop

Quite right

You wouldn't be allowed to verbally abuse a person on the street, so you shouldn't be allowed to just because you are at a football match

It is quite one thing to boo a player for a dirty tackle or a dive... but to get personal or vindictive is not on

Of course, it does work both ways. Chelsea Players and teams should be punished far more heavily than they currently are for the bullying and attempted intimidation of officials. It is also irrelevant what their pay packet is. Somehow I do not think that argument would be used if we was talking about racism

Re: Campbell calls for abuse to stop

Such a shame that the only way a player can catch the eye of the new England manager is to have a little moan.

I remember the day when talent and form was all that was needed to give them a chance of playing for England.

What next? A tearful apology on a Mid-Morning chav programme for the way she behaved to her first family?

With you on that one, hadn't really noticed he got that much when playing against Spurs to tell the truth.

Re: Campbell calls for abuse to stop

He's right and it doesn't matter how much he earns he should still be shown some respect like everyone else. If you spoke like that to someone outside of a football ground you would be arrested.

You must be pretty sad to verbally abuse someone you've never met.

Or maybe he should be verbally abused since he has done so much to deserve it....oh wait, no he hasn't.

If someone is paying me £100,000 a week, fans are paying upwards of £500 a season to watch me play, then I play like an overweight donkey week in week out, frankly they can feel free to call me what they like. As long as it's not racist or sick.

It's yet another attempt to sanitize football even further. No more, no less.

Re: Campbell calls for abuse to stop

Campbell will always deserve and get verbal abuse from the Spurs supporters he so utterly betrayed. Granted, racial or homophobic taunts are not acceptable, but outside of that, he's fair game. I sat next to the man at a testimonial dinner for Justin Edinbrough a few years back, and as captain of my club he said he was going nowhere when I asked about the Man Utd rumours. He publicly reiterated this comment, then walked out to our bitterest rivals. Had he not told outright lies to his own support, I could have forgiven him. To a lesser extent he did the same to Arsenal years later when he was released on a free having said he wanted to move abroad. Even Wenger has let his astonishment be known that Portsmouth is now on the Continent...

I must admit I was a bit peeved that he did that. It's one thing to claim you want 'continental football' and quite another to vanish off down the road to another premiership club. If he had just been honest, then no problem, but then he's a footballer, and honesty is not in their lexicon. How many footballers these days do we see 'kissing the badge' then within 48 hours being linked with, and then another 48 hours, off to another club?

They're a bunch of mercenaries through and through. Tbh I don't even have a problem with that, it's the stupid comments by fans who claim the players 'deserve the fans loyalty' and the crass lying through their teeth I can't stand.

Spot on though he's clearly a sensitive soul and I really hope that people will now stop because he asked them to

Hear hear.

Also, I'd be happy to be called "Judas" for 100K a week.

Diddums for him getting abuse. He's a back stabbing, two faced, unloyal "professional" who deserves everything he gets as long as it's not racist.

Re: Campbell calls for abuse to stop

I like Robbie Keanes reply:

But Keane told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Verbal abuse - I've had it, but nothing that would make me go crazy.

"I don't know what has been said to Sol. It obviously must have been something that really upset him for him to ask the FA to intervene."

"Things like that don't really bother me," added Keane. "You get fans who say things in the heat of the moment.

"Sometimes fans try to give you a little bit of stick and I give a little bit back to them. It's just a bit of banter really.

"Fans say things they don't really mean. It's a spur of the moment thing, getting a little bit of stick here and there doesn't hurt anyone.

"I don't like it when people swear when kids are sat beside them. You shouldn't swear in front of kids. If there are no kids there and someone gives you a bit of banter, I usually laugh and say something back to them."

And Keane defended players who swear on the pitch, insisting it is not meant to offend anyone.

"The fans are not giving abuse to ridicule you, they are saying it out of frustration," he stated.

"It's the same for a player on the pitch. If a bad decision goes against you, you say something out of frustration in those few seconds.

"We all do it. We are not doing it to upset anyone."

So basically, Campbell should stop being a girl and take it on the chin.

Agreed. A big thumbs up to Keane tbh. As for the last comment, I think that's the sort of remark he's on about.........

Re: Campbell calls for abuse to stop

So what did Campbell say to spark the soccer soap opera which has taken more turns than a Christmas Day edition of EastEnders?

My heart and soul is here and I want to play for Spurs. I am going nowhere - for now - August 4, 2000.

I can assure everyone that I won't be signing for another club while I am still a Spurs player. I want to win the Premiership and I want success in Europe but, most of all, I want to believe I can achieve that here - December 3, 2000.

Being a Spurs fan as a boy and a player for so many years, it would be hard for me to sign for Arsenal. I don't think the fans here would ever forgive me - December 17, 2000.

I want to play for Tottenham, that's it really. I am going nowhere - January 1, 2001.

I'm happy here and willing to do business now. I'm not selfish, I'm looking at the current situation and want the club to do well - January 5, 2001.

It's the ambition of Spurs and where we are going that concerns me. I have the right to keep my options open. Nobody can blame me for wanting success and above all wanting it at Tottenham. But talk is cheap - March 11, 2001.

As long as the club is healthy and things are in place, then myself and other players will want to join Tottenham or continue with them. I want to stay at Tottenham - March 26, 2001.

There is still a lot of sorting out to be done but I am sure it will be resolved - April 1, 2001.

I will leave it as late as possible - but I am happy at the moment and that is the main thing - April 13, 2001.

Going abroad is not in my mind. the ball is in Spurs' court now. I am in no hurry because I want to look at the whole picture. We will just have to wait and see what happens in the next two or three weeks - May 21, 2001.

Campbell then lit the blue touchpaper when he signed for Arsenal on a Bosman free on July 3, 2001.
