Re: Wimbledon 2007

Federer for the mens title and i doubt murray will get past the first week(unless it rains all week which is quite likley)

And either Henin or Serena Williams for the womens title.

Re: Wimbledon 2007

I'm not a big tennis fan now, TBH. I used to be, back in the 80's, when I would go to Wimbledon at least once every year.
Talking of Murray... it has always been an annoyance to me how selfish most players are. They go into the tournament with serious injuries, knowing full well that they probably won't make it through the first round! Why the frig don't they just pull out and give a young up and coming British player the experience of playing there? So what if they go out in the first round? It might at least give them the encouragement to stay in the game and the hunger to get there again....

Re: Wimbledon 2007

Federer will sleepwalk his way to victory. Nadal probably won't make it past the first week, because he hasn't been blessed with an easy peasy draw like he was last year.

I'm thinking Serena for the womens, but Sharapova and Henin have a good chance too.

Crikey! ... So he did! ...

murray out of wimbledon

Andy Murray has pulled out of Wimbledon after failing to recover from the wrist injury he suffered last month. Murray had planned on leaving the decision on his participation at the All England Club until after his practice session on Monday. But after an indoor session at Roehampton on Sunday, the 20-year-old announced he would not risk further damage to his wrist by taking on Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti in the first round. A statement from Murray read: "I have done everything possible to get ready for Wimbledon. I have played practice sets the last few days but still cannot hit a topspin forehand properly. "It has been six weeks of really hard work but I'm not 100% ready. The wrist is a very important part of tennis and there are a number of players who have made the decision to come back too soon and ended up with long-term injuries and I do not want to take the risk and make the same mistake. "The doctor has advised me not to play and that I probably need about 10 days to be ready. Unfortunately, I don't think it is going to rain for the next 10 days. "I love playing Wimbledon because of the great support I get from the British public and that is what I will miss the most." "To be honest, I was going to defy the doctors and play regardless, but between games today, I logged on to the sports section on AV Forums and noticed CFC1's insightful post on the greed of todays' tennis players, and I have to say it struck a chord with me." I have therefore decided to withdraw and let someone else take their chance." "God bless CFC1 ... If only there were more like him."

Re: Wimbledon 2007

I, for one, am glad he's pulled out.

Wearing a paraguay shirt, made me wonder why I bothered supporting the scots in different competitions if they're all like that!

And most of them I know are.

I think the players themselves were given the choice to call it off (which they did) I'm suprised they didn't play on.

RE: Henman v Moya game.

Had a little giggle to myself whilst reading Wed's Daily Mirror double spread on the game.

Section on page 1 called 'CELEB WATCH'. So who was at it?

1) Rula Lenska
2) David Sheepshanks (what do you mean 'who?' - he's the Ipswich chairman)
3) June Whitfield

ALl the big guns out for that game, eh !!

In order of annoyance:

1) Rain
2) Maria Sharapova's ear splitting grunts
3) Crowd: "Come on x!"

Yep. As thunder rumbles during Andy Roddick's match, the commoners that have infiltrated the Lawn Tennis Association can be content in knowing that they have succeeded in annoying me. One is not amused. Unlike in football, I am quite content in tickets going to suits and "VIPs". At least they know how to compose themselves with proper decorum

I say get rid of Henman Hill that molehill where they descend every year, flush them out of the stadiums and give tickets to the over-privileged and select

Re: Wimbledon 2007

I'm off to the women's finals tommorrow - should be Henin v Williams - looking forward to it. C'mon Henin - got to say I don't like any of the Williams crowd.
This was illustrayed the other night when Serena, talking to the umpire, referred to her opponent as "The Russian" - how disrespectful and down right rude. Not the way we do things here love.
Also looking forward to seeing one of the Men's semi's what a bonus!

Still British interest in the mens and mixed doubles!!

Re: Wimbledon 2007

Wow !! what a day we had - it was simply superb! Firstly couldn’t believe Henin didn't make the final but Marion Bartoli played so well in the semi she deserved her shot. TBH the crowd thought it would be a walk over but were probably 90% rooting for m'selle Bartoli. To be fair the score line flattered "the american". Marion "bunny hop" Bartoli seems such a talented player maybe next time? With all of the grunting, power of the hitting from both girls and the collective emotional roller-coaster from the crowd - it felt like a Roman gladiatorial contest with each battering the ball / each other. The time went so quickly.

Saw Federer up first (what a bonus) - although Gasquet seemed to be in the first set all of a sudden he was rolled over and steam rollered from then - got to be a better final against Nadal but with all Nadal has been through surely there can be only one result. Federer had such a presence on and around the court - you could just feed the energy and vibe from the guy and we were second row from the back (Row Y!).

Wandered around the place after the ladies singles and eventually ended up watching Murray and Jancoviv (final set of their 1/4 final (court 3)) from the second floor, centre court window overlooking as you could not get close to that game. What a thriller! 7-6; 6-7 and maybe 7-5? in the third (we couldn’t see the scoreboard from our vantage point). Jankovic looked knackered at the end of her match.

Went back in to see the last set of the mixed doubles where Fabrice Santoro (Fra) & Severine Bremond (Fra) bt 8th seeds Leander Paes (Ind) & Meghann Shaughnessy. TBF I hadn’t heard of these guys but it was entertaining. Thought that was it – heading for the exit, brilliant day feeling completely drained and yet satisfied - when NO! one of the security guys we’d been chatting to earlier in the day said – you might want to wait a few minutes as he’d heard Murray and Jankovic had been scheduled in to play their semi final!! Another 3 set super game for this pair (Gossip from the security guard reckons there IS something going on between these two (off court! Only a rumour) but they were definitely Hot on court. Murray was outstanding, as was Jankovic, who also worked the crowd a couple of times; it was Fab. Murray went to the “bathroom” between sets and Jankovic made a ball boy sit next to her in Murray’s seat and give him Murray’s racquet much to the amusement of the crowd. You can imagine the stupid giggling when JM came back : you had to be there really. The game finished about 8.10 what a result. Felt like immediately joining the queue for tomorrow’s game just to see a Briton in a Wimbledon final. I know I would have had no trouble sleeping anywhere last night. After 3 hour drive got home midnight – now that’s what I call a full day.

P.S tried to upload a photo failed miserably - must look up how to re-size a Jpeg sometime!
