It's fast, it's fun and immensely skillful - Field Hockey.
Did a quick search to find there was no thread for it so making one. Surely I'm not the only person on here who plays this amazing sport.
And before people say it's a girls sport etc. if you've ever watched a Proffesional Mens game it's so much better than football. BTW last season my Captain dislocated his shoulder in a Cup Semi-Final and still played on...how many girls would do that?

Agreed . it should be more widely promoted but after the gold medal in the 1998 olympics our team got forgotten. Grandstand use to show matches at one time.Ditto table tennis, squash and babington
Football has had its day in my view . Waaay overhyped. I only watch the internationals now
Must admit didnt know it had gone proffesional. Do they get big enough crowds to pay the wages?

A great game, haven't played since I was at school, but I don't think I'd want to either, based on how brutal it was even back then!
At my school, If you were in either the Rugby or Football teams, you were banned from playing Hockey! |

I am a hockey player and have been for school and club for best part of 20 years, although to look at me you wouldn't think it. Was playing for GEC Rugby but this summer we are changing to what willl most probably be Rugby & East Warwickshire HC. www.rewhc.co.uk |

My dad said Field Hockey was ruined once they started playing on artificial surfaces as it took the skill and stickwork out of the game and favoured a more physical athletic and long ball game, rather than the pass and dribbling of playing on grass.
He's Indian BTW and India won something about 6 Olympic golds in Hockey when played on grass. In fact there is a village in India near my mums old village in India that produced about 6 hockey olympians, the equivalent of brazilian kids from the slums honing their skills in alleys, these guys were honing their drilbbling skills on grass or bare earth.
It does bore me now as there is virtually no skill when the European or the Aussie teams are playing.

on artificial pitches the ball runs so much faster so there is more skill involved I'd say as it requires incredibly fast hands and perfect hand to eye co-ordination
when I was at badgers level we played on grass a few times at Bnerhyding (spelling) and at Merchants place and it's not as good you can beat people by merely hiting the ball downwards so it hops over there stick which is so much harder on astro

I played it a few times along with trying verious sports, but just found nothing compared to playing rugby, footie and cricket.
there are some sports, that yes require some skill, pace, strength etc, but they ARE STILL girls games, such as beach volleyball (long may it live!!), hockey, netball, badminton, rounders (including softball and yanky baseball), ice skating, gymnastics (yes blokes do it, they are really strong, and skillful and agile, it is still a girls sport!!) etc.
