Allardyce Named as Toon Boss

BS has signed a 3 year deal. What do you think?

Personally, I am hopeful he can take the club forward although in the short term it may be a little painful. I expect to see an awful lot of turnover with the players.

Re: Allardyce Named as Toon Boss

I think it's a sensible appointment, there really is no-one else out there available who given the financial backing could actually end the 52 years of nowt. It may not be the best to what but I think the toon now have to start thinking about achieving something instead. Good luck to him & good luck to the toon I say.

You been living in a shed?

I asked the question as we all thought it would happen but now it is official. We are serial under-achievers & have a history of bad decisions on managers. Sam is a bit of a shot in the dark & for once we have gone for ambition from someone who hasn't won anything as opposed to a manager who was won things (Roeder is an exception) but did so with clubs that were used to winning things & where things had since gone wrong for them.

Sam seems to want to win things & I expect he will soon give the hook to those players who don't share his ambition & are simply there for the ££££££'s. We have more than our fair share of those.

Ok ! so Allardice is now back in work. Thats funny as i distincly heard him say that he was taking time out to spend with his family and was going to have a rest. Smells fishy to me as i recon he had been poached and was told to keep quiet untill his official appointment.

Who is going to be the new manchester city boss ? Paul Jewel , Sven ?????

Nah, was only joking, seemed only a matter of time and a natural appointment - a good day for the Toon I feel (as much as I personally dislike Sam...)

Hopefully he will be given the time to rebuild the squad and turn them back into the team they should be. It won't happen next year or maybe even the one after, but the board need to keep that in mind and not sack him next season if they are stuggling mid table.

Will the board or the fans give him the time though? Especially if he has plenty of cash to spend in the summer?

Well hopefully they will have the intelligence to realise that Sam isn't going to suddenly turn Newcastle into a top 6 side overnight. Plus I don't think Newcastle have loads of cash to splash about either. But if the fans and board want instant results then we will be seeing another manager not last a season at Newcastle, because it won't happen. You can't polish a turd.

I agree with the comments above. IMO the problem will be meeting Freddy Shepherd's (unrealistic) expectations...

Wouldn't have been top of my list but now he's here I guess I've got to hope for the best. If nowt else he should improve our backroom set-up - by all accounts it is a bit limited.

Can't argue with that. This has been the problem, over optimistic, over expectant fans, and an under achieving, lacking in ambition team - and board. A very bad combination.

Hopefully Sam will be (for a change on Tyneside) given time and room to build a Newcastle side that can win things. Would be about time!

Re: Allardyce Named as Toon Boss

It's going to take 2 or 3 years to turn that team around.

Unless he's given silly money can't see more than 3 or 4 playeres moving on this summer and the same number coming back in, too much disruption to the team otherwise. That's as long as he can keep the good players he has, the strikers especially if he can get a fit Owen playing again.

Same again after next season 3 or 4 players in/out.

The 'castle fans arn't stupid, if they see any improvment next season they will support him. Once it gets into the 2nd season with him in charge it might be differnet story if they are still squabiling over mid-table with the 'smaller' teams.

Priorty for this summer wil be defenders though, wonder what his first thought was when he looked down the current squad list and saw Bramble

Probably "Ben Haim's contract runs out next month, I'll get him in sharpish".

Re: Allardyce Named as Toon Boss

Personally I'm well happy about this...

He's the right man at the right time....

But the fans and the club REALLY need to give him time, and not just one or even two seasons. He needs at LEAST three seasons probably more to turn things around good and proper.

Its good that the likes of Kieron Dyer will now get their arses kicked. Too many muppets at that club now that need a boot up their backside.

Its kind of ironic that on the day Newcastle announce Big Sam , former coach Kevin Bond launched legal proceedings against Newcastle . Bond was "let go" after the same Panorama programme that featured Sam and Sam Jr Explain that in court Freddie

Unfortunately, the Newcastle fans are extremely impatient, and your post shows it. Short-termism has been the blight that has ruined your club.

There are deep seated problems, and to expect them to finish above mid-table in season 2 is still pretty optimistic. If I were a Toon fan, I'd be happy for season 2 to be comfortable in mid-table, do well in the cups, as long as they were building a platform for future success.

Newcastle aren't a top 4 (or possibly even 7) club, so Toon fans need to manage their expectations. Big Sam isn't going to win the league within the next three seasons.

They aren't at top 4/ 7 team at the moment but they are certainly a top 4/ 7 club.

Newcastle supporters managing expectations & being impatient is a bit of a paradox - we haven't won a domestic trophy in over 50 years . We have earnt the right to expect something - but I take your point. We will never expect to win the league.

Sam will be given time but, it is a big club, with high revenue & expectation. If, by the end of the 2nd season, the fans do not see a light at the end of tunnel he will do well to see out his contract. We are used to failure, so we can see it coming quicker than most.

He's given himself a big job though.

Has to get in almost a complete defensive unit and get them playing before the start of next season. Probably still play better that the lot he's just got rid of though

Here's hoping that he can also attract buyers for Babayaro & Carr. There's talk of JL Samuel & Sol Campbell - not sure if they are the answer but we desperately need a good few new faces in to help sort out the back line.

Blimey, that was quick! Mind you he's seen how terrible they when Bolton have played Newcastle! That Bramble is the worst defender I've seen in years. Even Gus Caesar was better than him!

On what basis are they a top 4 or 7 club? As your own next paragraph said, you haven't won a domestic trophy in fifty years. Just having big crowds / revenues does not make you a top 7 club, let alone a top 4 club.

Good point. Burnley in the 60's, Derby in the 70's, and Forest in the 70's and 80's are all 'smaller' clubs than Newcastle, but they were all 'top five' material on the basis that they won things, and finished there or thereabouts on a reasonably regular basis.

Just having big support doesn't mean you are a 'top five' club.
