Fleecing of football fans continues unabated

It is quite noticeable how football has become big business over the last decade or so, and how people are quick to jump on the bandwagon if there is a pound to be made.

I read loads of posts on football forums about the price of getting to Athens for the CL final. It is quite obviously price fixing by all sides (airlines, hotels etc) and should not be allowed.

Latest example, I was reading teletext on RTE (Irish TV) and saw 'CL Final with ticket' on the main page with a page number to the holidays section. Thought I'd go and see what the price was. I was expecting around €1000 due to Liverpool being in it.

Imagine my shock when I read the price for Dublin - Athens flights, transfers to hotel, 1 night B&B (yes 1 single night) plus match ticket.

€2899 !!! Each.

And the deal was only available based on 2 sharing - thus guaranteeing €5800 for this travel agent.

An absolute disgrace - if there is any justice they won't sell a single package. Its time football fans stood up for themselves and stopped being ripped off.

Exactly my view. The Germans did it (twice, recently, and in the 70's), the Italians have done it, as have the Spanish. But will the English? Hell no. The day our fans manage to persuade the 'diehards' to use a bit of common and hit the clubs the only way they can, Satan will be skating to work.........

£30 million for the bottom team next season in the Prem. Do I see lowering of ticket prices? NO. Some clubs freezing prices means diddly squat when they are extortionately high to begin with

Well looking quickly, the price of plane tickets from Dublin to Athens would cost about £800-£1200 return alone with the likes of British Airways.

I don't know how much a ticket to the match costs or a hotel in Athens but unless it costs more than £700-£1100 for both, you can arrange to go for cheaper.

Yeah, but thats price fixing too!!

Any other time of the year a flight to Athens would never cost half that, even if you were to book the last seat on the plane, which is supposedly the most expensive.

The airlines should be forced to stick to your usual policy on pricing, and not be allowed to charge whatever they want just to make a quick buck.

I hope they are left with half empty planes on those flights to Athens.

But plane ticket prices are dictated by demand. You'll find that during school holidays they're always more expensive than a mid-week flight out of holidays.
I'm not saying it's right mind but it's not a new thing unfortunately.

This is not about ripping off the fans. BA just dont want 300 drunken scousers on one of there planes! Planes cant take off on breeze blocks.

Re: Fleecing of football fans continues unabated

This happens with all sorts of travel and holidays though. I'm paying a third of the cost to go to Centre Parcs the week before the October half term, and that's pretty standard across all holidays. I'm not saying its right but its standard practice in the travel industry to fleece the customer during the periods of high demand.

Why not get enough Liverpool fans together and charter your own plane.
