Re: Bob Woolmer has died

Very sad news,
The cause of death has yet to be established (or at least not yet released).

At first glance it seems to be that, or maybe a freak accident. - I shouldn't really speculate.
I'm sure all will become clear.

Re: Bob Woolmer has died

Very sad day for cricket. RIP Bob, you will be missed.

I have read somewhere it may have been a suspected heart attack. I just hope its nothing sinister.

Re: Bob Woolmer has died

A sad day indeed. Bob Woolmer was a great cricket coach and possibly destined to be the next England coach after Duncan Fletcher - which he would have found a piece of cake compared to the poisoned chalice that was coaching the Pakistan side.

Re: Bob Woolmer has died

Treeted s suspicious now by police. I did wonder

Woolmer's death 'suspicious' - police

Cricinfo staff

March 21, 2007

Police are now treating Bob Woolmer's death as suspicious, Mark Shields, the deputy commissioner of police, told a news conference in Jamaica. A full-scale investigation has been ordered.

"We have already informed the Woolmer family of these developments," Shields said. "Having met with the pathologists, our medical personnel and investigators, there is now sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Woolmer, which we are now treating as suspicious."

However, unconfirmed reports suggested Woolmer might have been murdered because marks were found around his neck.

Shields said the police had been in close contact with the Pakistan team management, the Cricket World Cup committee and the ICC, but he would not speculate on the cause of Woolmer's death. "It would be inappropriate for me to make any comment at this stage as we have still not got the final official report from the pathologists," he said.

Talat Ali, the Pakistan team manager, told Geo TV they had not been given full details by the police. "They have not made any reference to poisoning or anything yet, as some reports are suggesting," Ali said. "There is no information at all that this poison could be involved. Investigations will carry on so we cannot come to any conclusions right now."

Ali denied Pakistan were not allowed to travel. "There are no police restrictions on the team," he said. "As planned for now, we are flying back on Saturday."

Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious in his hotel room on Sunday and pronounced dead shortly after at a Jamaica hospital. Woolmer's family said after speaking to doctors they expected his death came from a stress-related heart attack.

His wife Gill told CNN-IBN, an Indian news channel, he did not complain of any chest pain after the match. An autopsy completed on Tuesday was inconclusive, but investigators were waiting for the results of toxicology tests to see if they helped determine the cause

Re: Bob Woolmer has died

Thanks LGS ... I now gather that his wife has issued denials about potential match fixing allegations being on the horizon... although, I can't see why she would have to front up on this issue in any case....

Re: Bob Woolmer has died

Just caught a glimpse in the newsagents of the front page of a tabloid, that is running the story that Bob might have been killed in a "mafia hit" as he was on the verge of naming a "Mr Fixit" in match fixing scandal ......

Re: Bob Woolmer has died

The Jamaica Observer and the Jamaica Gleaner both reported today that Mr Woolmer's death had been violent. The Observer said he had marks on his throat and that bones in the lower part of his face were broken, while the Gleaner said there was a broken bone in his neck.

It quoted an unnamed "high-ranking" police officer as saying the case was being treated as murder.

Mr Woolmer, the former Kent and England all-rounder, was found dead on the floor of his hotel room in New Kingston on Sunday morning, hours after his team was knocked out of the World Cup by Ireland.

The former Pakistan pace bowler Sarfraz Nawaz said Mr Woolmer had been murdered by the "match-fixing mafia".

"The theory going around in West Indies police circles is that Woolmer might have been killed by those who wanted to silence him on the issue of match fixing," Mr Nawaz was reported as saying.

An initial autopsy on Mr Woolmer was inconclusive and further fluid and tissue samples were taken from the 58-year-old's body.

Yesterday afternoon, about a dozen forensic officers spent four hours examining Mr Woolmer's 12th floor hotel room. It is believed that there were pools of blood in the room and there were suspicions over vomit found high on the walls. Police refused to confirm or deny reports that marks had been found on Mr Woolmer's throat.

The forensic team left carrying several bags of evidence and a senior officer said the room was being treated as a "potential crime scene".

It is unclear how many Pakistan team members have been questioned but detectives indicated that the players and their management may not be free to leave Jamaica as planned on Saturday.

Mr Woolmer suffered from mild Type 2 diabetes and was taking anti-inflammatory drugs, probably for arthritis.

The match in question was the West Indies one which Woolmer was about to blow the whistle on

Re: Bob Woolmer has died

Its sad that someone has lost their life so cheaply - if it was simply over a game of cricket then its even worse.

Lets hope they catch the guilty party soon.

Leaves the entire cricket WC on a real low now.

An arrest has been made following confirmation by Jamaican Police that they are treating the death of Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer as murder, according to New Delhi Television.
Chief of Geo TV Hamid Mir, speaking to Ndtv, said the person is not a Jamaican national and that police have confiscated his telephone.

Police are unwilling to reveal more details, but it is reported Woolmer was working on his autobiography at the time and some pages are missing.

and

POLICE will investigate whether Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer was murdered by figures involved in match-fixing.
Jamaican police today released a pathologist's report indicating that Woolmer, 58, died from "asphyxiation by manual strangulation".

Deputy commissioner Mark Shields said more than one person may have been involved.

"Bob was a large man - it would have taken some force," he said.

Shields said it was possible Woolmer was murdered by someone who knew him, as there was no sign of a forced entry.

"It seems that it may be somebody who knew him or was an associate - that is a possibility," he told Macquarie Radio.

ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said former London Metropolitan Police commissioner Paul Condon, head of the ICC's anti-corruption unit, would investigate if corruption played a role in Woolmer's death.
