Re: Anyone been to Wembley today?

I've not been, but it does look pretty special.

But £700m+??? Somewhere there are some well stuffed back pockets if you ask me.

And yes....it's still in the wrong place.............

Re: Anyone been to Wembley today?

I think a lot of fans (especially those outside London) liked it when the England team moved around the country. Certainly such an approach gives a LOT more people the chance to see their national team live than if games are confined to a single venue in London.

I agree it's nice to have a national (and neutral) stadium that can host FA Cup final etc, but 700m quid? The new Allianz Arena here in Munich (built for 2006 World Cup, and hosted the Opening Ceremony, Opening Game and a Semi-Final, plus numerous other games) cost 220m Euros.

Wembley looks fantastic, but is it really almost 5 times as good as this?

Re: Anyone been to Wembley today?

I live within mile or so of the stadium.....have to say it is pretty damn impressive....lol.....i still prefer the old twin towers having lived in this area for all my life, but the new Stadium isnt half nice to look at.....and the arch stands out a lot more than you think it would.....

i believe a reasonably amount of that money isnt going in to the stadium itself but the surrounding area.....you need to realise that the area around the old Wembley stadium had degenerated badly......Wembley was once THE shopping area in NW London for most people (once you get past Kilburn that is)....Harrow was nothing but M&S and a couple of little shops at the time....however Harrow was renovated and improved, so people started going there as it was cleaner and newer......especially once St Anns shopping centre was built around 1987 (opened by Princess Di) and Wembley went further downhill.....it got so bad even the market moved out for a few years

but the work they are doing now...oooohhhhh very purdy........shame you only have to go around the corner to get mugged 6 times on the same stretch of road in Stonebridge Park area

Wasn't the Allianz Arena exactly that though - constructed primarily for that event? Wembley is a replacement national stadium to host just about everything & for decades to come. I don't actually thinks it's particularly expensive all things considered.

I'm pretty sure that pitch & seating aside, it's a completely different stadium to anything else in Europe, I'm sure if they wanted to whack up a run of the mill 80,000 football stadium for £200-£300m, they could've done.

I'm going to Wembley on Saturday for the U1s game so looking forward to seeing exactly how spectacular it is.

Well, I'm not sure what difference that makes...it was constructed for the World Cup for sure, but the Allianz is the home ground of Bayern Munich now. It's still a fantastic stadium with seating for almost 70,000 people, great transport links. It is state of the art, definitely not run of the mill.

Pitch and seating aside? It's a football stadium, what else is there that really counts apart from pitch and seating????

What's so different about Wembley that sets it apart from any other football stadium in Europe, apart from the cost, and the length of time it took to build?

Re: Anyone been to Wembley today?

Didn't the old Wembley have to be bought first , then demolished ?
And on top of that , whilst 80000 seats may only be 14% more than the Allianz , it costs more than that 14% to engineer it into the design

aye, the demolishing was a very expensive process...they couldnt simply knock it down due to all the other buildings around it such as the conference centre and arena, plus it was a damn well built building!...lol

not sure but its possible some of that money is going toward the new conference centre etc as well.....difficult to tell exactly what all the money was allocated to as there is huge renovation going on.......including the walkway to Wembley Park Station and a brand new entrance area there, plus the new look to Wembley Stadium Station as well....(WP is tube, WS is mainline)

Re: Anyone been to Wembley today?

Buying the land - £120mil
Basic building of the stadium - £352mil
Demolishion and fitting out the new £99mil
Financing the Project , Management & other costs - £165mil
Contribution to local infrastructure - £21mil

New Wembley Stadium - Almost Priceless

Apart from my little punchline , figures taken from Wembleystadium.com

Re: Anyone been to Wembley today?

I was very impressed by the Stadia for the WC in Japan/S.Korea and Germany. Built in pretty good time and all impressive

Thankfully for any potential future WC in this country, the Premiership clubs have already done the FA a favour. Imagine the mess if this FA had to renovate stadia countrywide!

Stepped out of Wembley Park station earlier and was greeted by the stadium directly ahead of me.

It looks breathtaking.

Wow, when you need to pay £119 million just to get a clear patch of land you're allowed to build on (purchase and demolition costs) you're on a bit of a hiding to start with aren't you??!!!

I admit it does look good, it just seems incredibly expensive for a football stadium when other countries are doing it cheaper. Oh well, at least the FA didn't suggest England play all their games in The Dome

Re: Anyone been to Wembley today?

have had a distant view of Wembley and the giant arch ever since buying my house in NW London .... looks good on the skyline from where I am, as part of an almost panoramic view

regularly pass by it on the Tube Met line too, it is magnificent

There was an enormous car park but not a single car in it when I went. Your best bet is to get down to somewhere like Stanmore, park there & jump on the tube for 4 stops..
