Re: Good Luck Wolfie - The Lakeside 2007 Darts Final!

Is it just me or does this whole event seem somewhat of a white elephant when you consider that all the "best" players are playing in the PDC? Surely as a professional dart player who makes his living from the game you wouldn't be able to look yourself in the eye and call yourself "World Champion" after winning this event? I mean apart from Barney no-one has transferred to PDC and been able to compete have they? Steve Beaton has made a few quarters and semis etc but Fordham and the others have not managed to progress in the PDC championship IIRC. I mean look at the youbng kid who won it last year, or even the other finalist today - who?? I realise that the BDO are the governing body for the "amateur" / grass roots of the game, but it seems a stretch to call it a world championship.
It'd be like England calling themselves Word Cup champions if Brazil, France, Germany and everyone else didn't even participate and we just played a dozen games against pub teams. Bit like the fiasco that is modern Boxing titles, or the World Series in Baseball.

Not knocking the guys up there on the oche, but does anyone else find it a bit sad that the BDO tournament still promotes itself as the World Championship given the participants (or rather those not participating)?

Just 2p worth.

True. Talk is Van Gerwen, Jelle Klaasen and Mervyn King want to defect. I can't see how the BDO can stand up to the PDC any longer

Me either. Cracking final though. I was at the opening games at Frimley last weekend and it was a cracking atmosphere.

Re: Good Luck Wolfie - The Lakeside 2007 Darts Final!

PDC has the characters yes but in terms of players (barr Phil Taylor) there's not alot in it. BDO averages from the last 8 players was better than the PDC if you take Phil Taylor out. It's only really Taylor & just about Barney (at the mo) that are that far ahead of the likes of Wolfie & Co - the rest of them are on par. Just look at the players being selected for Premier Legaue this season - Mardle, Manley, Tripod, Baxter wouldn't get anywhere in the BDO, even Lloyd is too inconsistant.

PDC is a far better spectacle & I prefer it for that but combine the 2 & you'll be surprised, they'd be as many, if not more BDO players in the last 8 than PDC.

It was painful to watch! I really wanted Wolfie to win as he'd had some many attempts at the title over all the years! Nearly through it away.
Would have won £150 if Nixon had taken the title (from a £4 stake!) but was still pleased Wolfie won in the end!
