It seems to happen with all the 'known' managers. They usually have clubs queuing up for their services no matter how cr@p they were in the last job.

You're dead right. Not being good at a job in any other walk of life would make someone unemployable in that job. In footy it is almost a closed shop- once you're in, you're in forever. Someone will take you.
I know some would say that he has an affinity with the club, but surely an employer has a right to expect 100% ( or 120% in football

), and if you don't want to work for a club, don't take the job.
I still advocate no transfers for managers or players during the season. What you start a season with, you end a season with. Then players, managers and employers may focus their minds on the job in hand, rather than putting plans in place for when things go t1ts up.
