Thanks: Gave 771, Got 421 | New Charlton Manager Pardew is new Addicks manager Alan Pardew has been appointed Charlton's third manager of the season after Les Reed left the club by mutual consent on Christmas Eve.
Pardew, who was sacked by West Ham earlier this month, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Valley.
Reed was promoted from the role of assistant manager in mid-November when Iain Dowie was sacked, but led the side to just one win during his eight games in charge. The Addicks are bottom of the Barclays Premiership, seven points from safety.
The final straw for the Charlton board appears to be the results of the last week. They crashed out of the Carling Cup quarter-finals, losing 1-0 at home to Wycombe after a dismal display on Tuesday.
That was followed by a 2-0 defeat at Middlesbro on Saturday. Pardew's first match in charge will be Wednesday's London derby with Fulham.
A club statement announcing the news added that no further comment will be made at this time. Charlton will be holding a press conference at its Sparrows Lane training ground at 1.30pm on Boxing Day."

Not really a surprise considering the recent results. I thought he was a coach supposedly for a few years at the club.
Does it look like he has left the club completely ?
With Pardew's impending appointment it is maybe a case of the new man bringing in his own men. Time will tell if it is the right decision. Just shows what a job Allan Curbishley did in the past. Pardew will have to get the team going immediately if they are to avoid relegation. Some decent signings will aid him in his quest.

Sometimes football management baffles me.
Is it the only profession in the world where you can get sacked for doing an awful job and then get another high profile job a week later?
It seems to happen with all the 'known' managers. They usually have clubs queuing up for their services no matter how cr@p they were in the last job.
Would it not have fitted Charlton better to look for good young managers in the lower leagues, who they could get at a fraction of the cost of Pardew? Surely it would be worth a go. They are so awful looking at the minute that I don't think anybody can save them. Perhaps I will stand corrected.

| You're dead right. Not being good at a job in any other walk of life would make someone unemployable in that job. In footy it is almost a closed shop- once you're in, you're in forever. Someone will take you.
I know some would say that he has an affinity with the club, but surely an employer has a right to expect 100% ( or 120% in football ), and if you don't want to work for a club, don't take the job.
I still advocate no transfers for managers or players during the season. What you start a season with, you end a season with. Then players, managers and employers may focus their minds on the job in hand, rather than putting plans in place for when things go t1ts up.

I think you're all being a little harsh, Curbishley did wonders at Charlton, and Pardew did wonders at West Ham.
They don't immediately become bad managers, and usually it is Knee jerk reactions and a reaction to shareholders as to why they get sacked.
Take Moysey, last season......there were people screaming for his head after an atrocious set of results, but he didn't suddenly become a bad manager.....
Then again there was managers that always seemed to get jobs regardless......
Alan Ball, was always crap, Harry Basset, crap, Bryan Robson.....etc

He set up Wimbledons squad that went on to win the cup under Gould, and kept Sheff Utd in the top flight for four seasons on 'zero' money. How does that count as 'crap'?
Alan Ball &Bryan Robson yeah they were/are crap!
As Shearer said, how can Pardew be too poor to keep West Ham in the Prem, yet deemed capable of doing so with a weaker squad and less money at Charlton? Football, as I've said before, just isn't in our plane of reality.
