Why do we support the team's we do?

After JohnG's "first match" thread, I thought I'd follow on and ask if we remember the defining moment that led to us supporting the team's that we do?

I remember I started supporting Chelsea 5 minutes before the 1967 FA Cup final, simply because my mates supported Spurs, so I wanted to be different to them! I recall we stopped playing in the street and all ran in to listen to the game on our radios! (Didn't have a TV )That was it! We lost the game unfortunately......

No defining moment at all for me. I support Crystal Palace as they were my local team at the time.

Funnily enough Ian, I was born & raised in Brixton, and geographically, CP were my nearest club. In fact, my first game was CP v QPR reserves!

I have always lived Bolton and all of my family are Bolton fans/season ticket holders, so since 1980ish i have been foolwing the Whites. Prior to this, i was easily led, and went to a few Liverpool games.

When I was really young I used to stay at my nan and grandad's place now and again. In their spare room they had a cupboard above the wardrobe which contained all my dad's old Spurs annuals and programmes, and I used to flick through them all the time.

So I guess I got into supporting Spurs because my dad supported them.

Cheers dad!

My family are originally from Enfield. There's a 50/50 slit between Spurs & Brentford supporters. I chose Spurs because that's who my grandad supported.

You know CFC1, I did my university dissertation on this question under the main title of:

Football Fandom as a Religion.

Got a first on it, thus making me an expert.

For me it's just location and Family. That's it. I feel sorry for people who have to 'choose' a team.

Although I'm Irish, I have been a Real Madrid fan since the early 80s. 1st time I can remember cheering them on was the 1981 EC Final v Liverpool - lot of my school friends were 'Pool fans plus I liked their all-white strip!!

I remember liking Madrid for their flamboyant style and always wanting to entertain and score plenty of goals. This was especially prominent in the Butragueno and Hugo Sanchez era. Used to wait every week for 'Midweek Sports Special' on ITV so I could see another 5-2 or 6-1 victory, usually complete with a Sanchez overhead kick!!

Been hooked ever since.

I've been an Everton fan since I was about 8 years old. No real reason apart from that Liverpool and Everton were the two big teams of the 80s and everyone at school was choosing Liverpool just because they were the better team at the team, so I thought I would be different and choose Everton. Stuck with them though through the good times and bad.

Also, there are no decent teams in my area to support as a local team. There are no premiership teams for about 1 1/2 hours drive in any direction.

One of my best mates supported Millwall all through his schooldays. We lost touch after leaving school, then met again in our mid 20's and he had defected to Man Utd! How does that happen?

My grandparents (and great grandparents before them) lived in Avenell Road Highbury until the late 40's, literally on the doorstep of Arsenal stadium. My uncle persuaded me to follow in the family tradition, so I'm the fourth generation of Arsenal fans in our family.

I was born in Luton and lived there for a few years before moving away (mainly due to my parents )

My family is pretty much all from Luton and my dad used to take me to all the home games and my grand and great grand parents were all Luton fans. I live a short distance up the motor way these days but am still a season ticket holder.

When I was about 9 my sister took me to Hillsbrough to see Wednesday against Man U when the greats were playing for them-Best, Charlton, Law etc. Wednesday won 5-4. The next game she took me to was Wednesday against Leeds at Hillsbrough. Leeds won 2-1 and played them off the park.
Leeds ever since.
Cynical? Yes. Tough? Definitely.
But that side became one of the best ever created along with Liverpool just after that and Arsenal during the long unbeaten run.

When I was a child my parents used to live very close (about ten minutes walk) to the Villa ground and I went to a few matches (mainly the Christmas ones) over the years. Then when I became a teenager I went to a few more matches with some friends from school. I didn't start going regularly until my son was a couple of years old and I started taking him as hes obsessed with football. So its a mixture of it being my local club and habit building up the emotional investment in Villa.

Born in Swindon to a Manc dad, and a scouse mum... my old man has been to old trafford over 300 times, yet is a liverpool fan... as that's what his dad was. So that's what I am. Plus my great uncle played for them back in the 1930's... although I'm unable to find anything online about him.

I lived in Somerset untill the age of 8 and supported liverpool just because I liked the way they played. Then we moved up to London and my dad (a life-long chelsea fan) took me to my first game.

It was terrible, we sat in the benches, it was wednesday night, cold, horrible. And we lost. But i was hooked, the atmosphere was awesome and i felt like i belonged.

That was me then, Chelsea till i die, even if i wasn't born that way!

I did a dissertation on football and culture at uni too, which got me a first, mainly because i actually did some work towards it, interesting subject though...

And you don't feel the need to lecture on the subject? (unlike some)

Followed Bolton for 24 years and seen every thing really lowest crowd at Burnden park, the hammering of Newport county when I was a ball boy and counted all the away support all 24 of them! and our sad relegation to the old div 4 over two legs in the old playoff system to Aldershot! No real defining moment as to why just local team and loved every minute ups and downs!
