Smile An England manager with guts - whatever next !

Well it appears Mr McClaren has had the guts to drop David Beckham from the squad, things may be looking up ! He also mentioned the word "passion" at least half a dozen times in his press conference

Whether you like him or not... Becks set pieces etc did a lot for England. Ye, consider a different team, but he would surely be a valuable player, even off the bench.

Phil Neville back.. great... thats guts for you. I know which midfielder I would pick.

I think with Phillip (if I may be so casual) is that he has been working hard at Everton (it is all about opinion in this sport )

Taylor wanted Carson for the U21 game so I suppose Foster was the only one left...logical since apart from Grandad James there are no decent goalkeepers out of 5 names - but that's enough....it is only goal...how many injuries can you get?

Thank god David 'the-legs-left-him-long-time-ago' Beckham has gone

Agreed, but I think Gerrard, Lamps & even Rooney can also give you that now, in addition to their value in open play!

It was obvious something like this was going to happen.

Mclaren is a small time manager who has no name in European football, nevermind International football.

He has purposely dropped Beckham to raise his own profile and create power over the team.

I for one, disagree with his decision. Let's hope this isn't the start of another Taylor like era.

The only reason i believe Becks was dropped is he might have a bigger input then Mclaren would like.I do think Becks had a large input in team choice in the Sven era.

I'd rather have an intefeering Becks than Phil Neville...and Kieran Richardson.

Hell, I'd rather have my mate with one leg than Phil neville.

Strong United youngster bias int he squad don't you think? (apart from Becks like).

Beckham was fairly poor in Germany and very very poor in Portugal so I would maybe have picked him in the squad but not had him in the team. I wonder if Beckham causes friction with the other players due to the fact in certain matches Sven tried to make everything revolve around him ? As someone else has pointed out, Gerrard and Rooney are more than capable of taking over the free kick roll.
I never thought I'd say this but I would have picked Phil neville rather than Jenas. Unfortunately for me, Jenas has gone a few steps back since leaving Forest and probably believes all the hype surrounding him.
We are struggling for good goalkeepers at the moment so we have to think long term.

Must admit the Phillip neville one has me a bit confused as well.

I forgot to say in my post above that I was also baffled about the Phil Neville inclusion, as I thought we were now building for the future, but for me, Jenas is nowhere good enough to play for England and should not have been taken to Germany.

I would imagine those players are just stop gaps / squad fillers. Players like King and Carrick would probably replace them if fit I'm sure.

But if not Jenas and Neville who would you pick?

I'm hoping that Jenas will receive a shock to the system and pull himself together and start performing again. Some England squad players have had it too easy I reckon, always knowing they are going to be in the squad no matter what.

do you think he might be dropping him now just so he can say that he does drop the big names because it stuck with sven that he did not drop anybody
and he might as well get it out of the way now
i think he will be back for the next game
it allso distances him from sven which is something he will have to work hard at if /when things go wrong

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

By dropping Beckham he can be accused of doing it for show by the cynics, if he doesn't drop Beckham he will be accused of being just like Sven.

I doubt we will see Beckham again unless performances without him take a down turn....which I doubt.

I am actually feeling pretty positive about his appointment at the moment. He seems to be making all the right noises and moves for me, appointing Venables could be a master stroke.

Of course it is only a few days to his first game...so get ready for a change in mind. The game on wednesday could be the best balanced/penetrating midfield team we have put out in a while with the pace of Lennon down the right and probably Downing down the left. That leaves Gerrard and Lampard in the middle again, but if anyone can get them working together I reckon it is Venables.

Not sure about Ashton, but defo worth a shout if Crouch is the other option.

Just a thought...Maybe Beckham has also had enough and wants to walk away from the England scene altogether.

I know that after he relinquished the captaincy, he did say that he wanted to continue as a player, but then he would say that, wouldn't he? He was hardly going to alienate himself by saying he didn't want to play for his country again!

McClaren omitting him from the next squad, and the reasons cited, may be an orchestrated manoever to smokescreen the situation somewhat.

Taking aside the injuries to Michael Owen & Joe Cole, McClarens squad is scraping the barrel a bit when you analyse it! It's not his fault for the current lack of talent in depth, I know, but IMO some of the inclusions shouldn't be near an England team (even for a friendly match). I am talking about Foster, Dawson, Phil Neville, Young, Downing, Jenas, Richardson & Ashton. They should in actual fact, call it an England B match (or even C)!

How many of these players would get a regular place in the top 4 teams? (or even on the bench come to that)? Certainly not at my club, anyway!

Meow . Having been a long suffering yid fan for many many years now, I have to agree that Jenas is not up to England first team selection. But after that world cup how many are? Mr McC has certainly got balls and I for one am looking forward to a new era of England domination again. Sorry, when was the last?.

Pleased that Lennon is going to get a good run at last. Lots more to expect from him me thinks.

Off to see the boys today against Real Sociedad and looking forward to seeing Zokora make his home appearance.

P.S Mr CFC1. Roll on 5th November @WHL for an early fireworks party for you boys. Can you cope with rocket Lennon this year. Shame about the sending off last time round cos we certainly had the upper hand up to that point.

Apart from Foster, Neville and Jenas, I disagree with that view entirely

Take the spectacles off. This is about England, not Chelsea "buy-one, get-another-for-twice-as-much So Crespo wouldn't be good enough for international football by that analogy? I think it's time the using Chelski as an argument should be laid to rest

Apart from those those 3 names, I have no problems with the squad. Bear in mind, due to injuries, they wouldn't be there

1. Get used to it. That situation aint gonna change anytime soon!

2. He won't ge a kick against either Ashley Cole or Wayne Bridge. I reckon he'll have to be substituted by half-time for his own good!
