I'm still trying to get my head around Man Utd paying £18.6million for Michael Carrick - it's absolutely absurd.
I know Carrick is/was a very important player to Spurs, I've seen him live on a number of occassions at the lane but with a little bit or decent scouting on the continent, Man Utd could find 3 players of his ability for that total amount.
That's nearly double what Liverpool paid for Xabi Alonso & he can tackle. The entire Spurs board must be grinning from ear to ear today.

Do agree with you. Not worth the money. Another wonderful buy by united.
If he was not English how much would he be worth ?
Real Madrid sign Cannavaro, World Cup winner for 13.7m!!! Thats worth 13.7m just to see a world cup medal.
But football is a funny old game. Duff goes for 5m to Newcastle?

We are happy with £18.6m, and it DOES seem like an awful lot of money.. However, Fergie is usually a very astute man, and it may turn out that Carrick takes that extra step up in quality at Old Trafford and cements himself and the next "big thing" for England.
Either that, or we got the red-handed in the tapping up porcess and decided to milk them for all we could get in return for not grassing them up! (I tend to think this is the case, as Jol kept going on about "suitable compensation" in his interviews at the weekend, not "transfer fees"...

Lovely jubbley
Good player, and he was very important to us, but that figure is monstrously overvaluing him, I feel. Robinson told me Carrick was gonna go a few weeks ago - but he did also say Zokora seems like twice the player (at less than half the price).
Respect to the Spurs board for holding out for the price that suited then, not United. Levy is a very, very tough negotiator. For instance, I'll be surprised if he pays over the odds for Chimbonda just becuae we have a few extra quid from Carrick.
Also, respect for Martin Jol - his parting comments re Carrick appear very respectful and complimentary. I for one will applaud Carrick when he returns to the Lane - he gave good service and we made good money, so to my mind he leaves on good terms - I just hope he doesn't say anything silly in the next few days.
We have replacements waiting in the wings - Tom Huddlestone could be a star this season now - and hopefully some of the money will be spent on a left winger...

Even though I'm an Arsenal fan, I've gotta say that was very good business for Spurs, Carrick is good but not worth £18M, especially with established internationals available in the continent for much less.
Why don't spurs play Lennon on the left? He came off the bench to play there in a game last season and was devastating, he reminded me of Overmars.

| It's an option, sure - but I for one prefer him on the right... like to play our best players in their best position...

Yes a nice bit of business for Spurs
But let's not be too harsh on Ferguson. Ballack was cheap at being free, but rejected him. Emerson was always likely to join his old coach at Real. And Duff was cheap but he still has 33 yr old Giggs around....
P.S. I presume the other thread will be allowed to die now...to be brought back if last year was a one off and you go back to mid table obscurity again |

Symptomatic of the reason why some managers prefer foreign buys? Hmmmm? Again, coming from an Arsenal fan, that's a good piece of business for Spurs, £18 million for Carrick is well over the odds.
Partly an attempt to prove Utd can still mix it with the 'big boys' transfer fee wise?

Rooney was £20mil +
£1m if United win the Champions League
£500,000 if United are runners-up in the Champions League
£500,000 if United win the Premiership
£250,000 if United finish second in the Premiership
£150,000 if United win the FA Cup
£500,000 if Rooney earns 20 England caps in competitive games while a United player
£500,000 if Rooney plays a further 20 times for England in competitive games while a United player.
