Roy Keane announces retirement

story here due to a hip injury. Roy was one of the best players I've ever seen at Forest, at his peak he was superb for us, just a shame he went to a lesser club

Yeah Celtic arn't what they used to be since they realised you don't need world class players to win the SPL; you don't even need class players.

shame - top top player for man united - dragged us through many games which we would have lost and a great example of a midfield general!

Thanks ROY!

Totally agree, despise the bloke as a person (& it hurts me to say this as i'm a Liverpool fan!) but you can't question his footballing prowess for 4 or 5 years he was one of the best midfielders in the world.

Mr Ferguson owes a lot of his success to him & that shouldn't be forgotten.

I'm sure Saddam Hussein got nice gifts for his nephews but doesn't make him any less of a bad person.

I despise Keane being described as a legend; he is everything that is wrong with football and his career should have been finished with a ban. I would say he was a fantastic captain but not one of the best midfield players in the world; he only did well because of the quality around him.

I agree with most of the points raised in this thread! Yes he as a great player. Yes he was a thug and yes he should have been given a lengthy ban after the tackle of Haaland, especially after his book came out!

5 match ban and £150k fine . Served and paid . I wish he had finished his career ot OT , but everyone knew he wanted to finish at Celtic
And for a final time , as I have previously mentioned on another thread .Haaland retired due to an injury to his other Knee , not the one Keane went in on . He even played a comeback game for City before retirement .

Can't think of much to add. He could have been one of the greats but his brutish antics preclude him. Cloughie made him great. Ferguson was scared of him.

As for running out on your country- if I was Irish, I'd be ashamed of him.

Legend. Shame he missed the CL final

And shame on those who want to put a man down for past wrongs...it takes more of a man to forgive than to ask for forgiveness imo (not that Keane has said sorry for everything )

he was all the things mentioned above, but I can't deny having seen him play live several times, was his energy. leadership, motivation and pure drive to win.

Every team needs a Roy Keene.

As mentioned earlier for 4-5 years in the mid 90's he was awesome for Utd.

Like Souness before him, a badly flawed genius. Great player, great leader, but a really nasty piece of work. Not quite as despicable as Souey, but a real thug nonetheless.

Undoubtedly though, without him Utd would not have won as much as they did. For that he must go down as Utd legend - even if the rest of us despised him!

It is a shame he didn't get another manager like Brian Clough to keep him under control.

What a great player.....

Watched him on his Utd debut (home) against Sheff Utd in 93 and was there when he made 'that' challenge on Alf-inge 'Halfleg' (At least thats what they called him after the match)

Not sure where people get the 'Thug' tag from Ok yes he made one or two silly challenges one being the above, another TBH was the same tackle on AIH in 97 at Elland Rd..... that one ended up costing him dear.

Have people forgot that the game is (Was ) a man's game, where hard physical contact whether fair or not was part and parcel of the game.

Are all hard physical players called the same ...?? ... Viera...Souness...Tommy Smith...'Chopper' Harris....

Whether you rated him as a thug or not for me he epitomised the true footballing professional.

Your opinion disgusts me.

Roy Keane deliberately launched an awful challenge that ended a player's career. That alone means he deserves a ban. He was a thug and there is no place in modern football for players like that. I don't want football to become a non-contact sport but I will not accept anyone describe Keane as a true professional.

Utd fans cling to that keanes 'one really bad challenge' routine too often. He kicked and clogged in a manner that if he'd been wearing any other shirt he would've spent more time in the bath than on the pitch. Elbows, late challenges etc all his hallmarks. Yes, he wouldn't stood out in the 70's, but he wasn't playing in the 70's! Hence his foulplay was even more unacceptable. Viera, who was mentioned rather humerously in the same breath, was punished (and rightly at times) constantly, unlike Keane, for being too aggressive. Keane wasn't aggressive he was cynical.

There's a world of diffrence between 'storming off' and being sent home from the World Cup. For in essence was for standing up for something you belive to be right.
What on earth is the picture there for ??..... let me think Highlights the gulf between medals won by a player whilst playing Premiership football ??? Am I right

Wow fella your easily disgusted..........Like them or not there my opinions and there is bugger all you can do about them.
Just to set you straight, Alfie actually played again after the 'Horror' tackle .....?? All this 'he ended his carear 'crap' has been written before... much of it around the time AIH tried to sue for damages....... him playing for City again after the 'said' incident was IIRC the crucial part of evidence.

He's a total joke, the pic is to highlight a PRO and a thug.

He thought twice about having a go at Shearer as he would have come off worse.

A "pro" would have played for his country not spat the dummy out, well he never was world class was he.

At least he had the decency to play for "his" team(Celtic), even though he was crocked....
