Any guesses as to what the transfer fee will be?

I`d say £55 million. Uncle Roman`s not going to let him slip out of his grasp now.

I think this means they will be playing like AC Milan, with Crespo and Shevchenko up front, with a 4 in midfield of lampard, ballack, makalele and Essien/maniche.

Sounds like a pretty scary team to me.

Maniche has gone. I have a sneaky feeling that Milan might want Drogba as in a part exchange.

And yeah, if Henry was £50 mil, i`m sure that Milan will hold out for the big ££ from Roman, knowing how much he wants Shevchenko.

Do you know just how many times players were linked to Chelsea. Yeah, OK, they have been after him for a long time and I believe it will (or maybe has?) happen, but until Chelsea confirm it on their website or Chelsea TV I won't get worked up about it!

I would normally feel the same however to hear both Shevchenko and the AC Milan president say that negotiations were to start with Chelsea...makes me think it will happen!

I've been so busy at work this week I hadn't been reading my email, and missed CTV the last two days. From what you say, it sounds like the Champions League next year is a strong possibility!

Just read some email. How about these two reports?

QOUTE:
ROME, May 26 (Reuters) - Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko is leaving AC Milan who will start negotiations over his transfer with English champions Chelsea, according to a statement published on AC Milan's website on Friday.

"I'm leaving for family reasons," Shevchenko, a former European footballer of the year, said. "I thank the club for all they've given me. There's no relationship problem and there's no economic problem."
Adriano Galliani, vice president of AC Milan, said in the same statement that the club would start negotiations with Chelsea and said "it will not be easy".

AND QUOTE:
Staff and agencies
Friday May 26, 2006

AC Milan have accepted Andriy Shevchenko's transfer request but have warned Chelsea they must break the bank to land the Ukraine striker.
Shevchenko appeared alongside the Italian club's vice-president Adriano Galliani at their offices in Via Turati in downtown Milan at a press conference to announce his decision this afternoon.

"I am leaving for family reasons - I want to thank the club for everything it's given to me," said Shevchenko. "There's no problems regarding my relationship with anyone in the club or any financial problems."

Galliani, in day-to-day control of the club owned by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, added: "It's a victory of the English language over the Italian language." That was apparently a reference to Shevchenko's American wife who reportedly wants a move to England. "I tried to convince him to stay up until the minute before the press conference. It's certainly the most painful separation since I've been at Milan. Now we'll start dealing with Chelsea, and it won't be easy."
"I've tried to convince him to stay - even one minute prior to the press conference," continued Galliani. "This is certainly the most painful divorce since I have been at Milan and from now on we will begin negotiations with Chelsea and it will not be easy."

Personally I think that Milan might do OK out of this deal.

As I have posted before, Shev is 29 (30 in Sept I think) and has not been the same force over the last 2 seasons that he used to be. I think that he is on the way down now. Still plenty of life to play against the like of Villa, Newcastle, Watford though.

I reckon they will get about £35 million cash for him. But they will probably try to get a player in exchange (be it Crespo or Gallas) as well.

As for the player saying he is moving for family issues - who's he kidding. He's nearing the end and is moving for money. He has been in Milan since 1999 and doesn't seem to have had any family issues until Chelsea come knocking.

19 goals last season in Serie A is 'on the way out'! How many was he banging in when he was on fire! In a leauge where goals are rarer than hens teeth I think thats a pretty fair haul!

I completely agree, 19 goals in 28 appearances is fantastic in Serie A & he's hardly on a paupers salary at Milan.
The reason he has given for wanting to leave Italy sounds legitimate to me.

What reason did he give? Didn't hear.

I realise he got 19 this season (Luca Toni got 31 I believe).

He would usually have got mid 20s each season. I think he was the top scorer in Serie A for 3 or 4 seasons in a row.

I mean that his general play is on the way down. I watch a lot of foreign football and he just doesn't seem as sharp. I think his CL performances have not been great for last 2 years as well.

Admittedly he is still a great player, but should Milan get £35million for him then its a great price for someone about to turn 30 soon.

Ahhhhh, don't worry about it. Liverpool bought everyone worthy in sight in 88', and the Mancs had plenty of 'bench warmers' during the 90's to stop other teams getting them, but all things come to an end.

Most of the money Liverpool spent on players back in 1987/88 came from the sale of Ian Rush to Juventus and not a penny was spent on players such as Ray Houghton, John Barnes and John Aldridge. Liverpool have never brought the league title like Chelsea have.

Liverpool and United's money is brought about via success.

Chelsea's wealth is just false, artifical and unsustainable in the very, very long run (thanks to Roman's millions).

Oh behave! That season Liverpool spent a fortune on players. Very few Liverpool stars were youth produced, and they were never shy of spending big. Toshack, Mcdermott, Dalglish, Kennedy (r), Kennedy (a) to name but a few long before that season.

Utd's entire 1st team, bar two, in 93' was bought for a fee, and since most of that squad was internationals not small ones either. As that was their 1st championship since 1967, and only their 4th trophy under ferguson (and one of them was the leauge cup!) that's hardly bringing in big names due to 'huge success'.

Why don't people just check instead of moaning about Chelsea, and listening to Skyspin?

These are the facts for the 1987/88 season. Ian Rush was sold for 2.7 million.
Ray Houghton, John Barnes and John Aldridge cost a combined 2.4 million and
Peter Beardsley was brought for 1.9 million. Therefore Liverpool spent just 1.6 million on players that season. How on earth can you compare that to what
Chelsea have spent in the last 3 years. Oh and by the way Toshack, Mcdermott and the kennedy's were never big buys and Dalglish was brought from the proceeds of Keegans transfer to Hamburg that year.

Could not believe the reason Shev gave for him wanting to move to Chelsea !!

He wants to learn English so that he can chat to the missus in something other than Italian. What nonsense. Could he not have hired a tutor in Milan?

To be honest I think the reason he wants to move is that his Mrs doesn't like it in Italy.

She is American and obviously one of the worlds best players isn't gonna to and play MLS So England is the next best thing.

You can't say it's money, because someone on £100,000 a week can buy what they want anyway, another 20k a week isn't going to make a difference. Footballers make just as much money out of sponsership as their "basic" ()
so I really think that can be discredited.

However he isnt gonna make a statement before the worlds media "it's because my wife told me to", I am sure he would rather people thought he was going for the money.

Since £1.6 million was a hell of lot at that time, quite easily! Not to mention the issue was buying everyone in sight. Did or did not Liverpool buy all the key players on the market that year? Yes or no? Do you know anything about footie? Toshack was the buy of that year, and was rated as seriously expensive as he came from Div2. So Dalglish wasn't a big buy then? Jeez.

Chelsea spend what's available. In fact over the last year the number of big buys has trimmed right down as even his nibs (thru the manager) has warned that the coffers aren't bottomless.

If you compare the current crop of players at Chelsea to Utds teams of the 90's there isn't much difference when comparing the level of talent and the size of the wedge spent, bearing in mind the current inflated market.

It's also well worth a good laugh listening to other fans bitching about Chelsea, when say for example, Liverpool have spent over £90 million on players themselves in the last three seasons!

If the Russians cash was coming into Anfield then no-one would be saying a word. Either fans or press.

I think you're right Lawrenzini. Would anyone admit their old womans bellyaching is behind a transfer?

I will explain to you again .Dalglish was brought from the proceeds of keegan's transfer to Hamburg,so you can't say that he was a big buy. Most of the players that Liverpool brought in 1987 came from the proceeds of Ian Rush's transfer to Juventus. Liverpool have never had the bottomless pit of money that Chelsea have now. Yes Liverpool may have spent 90 million on players over the last 3 seasons but Chelsea spent that in 1, that is the difference.
Chelsea finished 4th in the premiership in 2003 and have since won it twice,
so it doesn't take a genius to work out what has happened.

I wait with baited breath for Liverpool's spending to bring home the title then!
