Souness gets the boot

so Souness has run out of time and got the boot - wonder who the next poor sod will be who has to live up the expectations of a 'huge' club who haven't won bugger all for half a century

Martin Tyler when Souness was incharge at Liverpool . Martin said the place was horrible to go to . Liverpool was like a family . Souness ruined that

If they've got any sense they'll stick Shearer as caretaker player manager until the end of the season, no harm in doing so, no new manager on big bucks & they get a quick look at Shearer is a manager.

The squad they have they should be challenging the top spots, the team available to Souness was nowhere near that but was at least good enough to be in the top half of midtable..

Should sack their defence next.....

Anyone read the interview with Ruud Gullit citing Shearer as the root cause of all the problems at Newcastle? Evidently, there is one man bigger than the club, the fans etal and that is Shearer.

I think this puts Shearer in such a win-win situation. If things go ok he just moves in as manager when he ends his career soon. .......... if Newc get relegated he moves in to "raise them from the ashes" like wot Keegan did like pet man hinny

.

True. However, there is nothing to suggest that Shearer will make a decent manager. Loads of top quality players try and transcend the gap from player to manager and fail, whilst in reverse some average players make superb managers....

yep thats true. I guess the only advantage he might have is that he has worked as a team captain for many many years and for England.... so I guess he has been second-fiddle to the manager a long time and would certainly have learnt a lot.

On the downside, he's not exactly Mr Enthusiasm. A team-talk by him could possibly put you to sleep !

We had a legend at Bristol City, an ex Newcastle pro in fact, named Brian Tinnion. loved by everyone at the club, was presented with the managers job and promptly ripped the heart and sole out of the club, selling all of our best players as he had personality issues with them. On his first day in charge he walked in and declared - 'i no longer wish to be known as tinman, from here on in I am the Gaffer.....' So, it can go terribly wrong as he went from hero to zero and was sacked after we were stuffed 7-1 at Swansea, last Sept.

Pete.

From what I know about Freddie Shepherd I think that George Graham would be the most suitable candidate for the job.

Wouldn't be the first time a player has been 'bigger' than the club and caused no end of background problems.

One of the guys at works a (long suffering) Geordie and he muttered similiar things about Shearer. They seem to have a problem with criticising him.

Went to see your boys last nite Mr Overkill (North Bank Upper), I won't go into any details cos you no doubt saw them all yourself & I won't gloat.

What's up with Sol though? Wenger's sort of implying he's not right in the head at the mo........apart from 2 howlers (which all pros do at least once in their lives), why not?

As a newcastle fan, I'm glad to be shot of Souness, I wish Freddie was less dodgy and that Shearer had his coaching badges and had done three years management elsewhere.

I'm suprised at the anti-Newcastle feeling, esp since in the mid-late nineties we were popular as the everyones second favourite team. (not true but it was a pleasant notion).

The problems at Newcastle are much more deep-rooted than Souness or Shearer.

The "transition" period will last a lot longer yet. That we can cope with, with a few champions league places acheived now and again. But lower table? Just not on.

No idea who the next guy should be - but in all honesty, a Geordie would at least understand the obsessiveness of the fans, and perhaps be allowed longer than Souness to turn things around
.

Perhaps Souness did the job he was recruited for and solely getting rid of Bellamy may have made things better. Dyer and Bowyer were due to be shipped out to were they not?

As for a new manager, in my post earlier, Ruud simply stated that simply removing one or two problem players is not the answer as Shearer IS the problem but he is untouchable.

One good thing to come from Souness reign is that he has left a quality squad in place that the right man could work with. Martin O'Neill for example?

Don't go there! I should think, even with your lot's less than impressive results of late, that you must be feeling pretty darn confident right now!

I think Wengers right. Sols had problems ever since his his family tragedy, and he's not been the same player since. Even if he was 100% fit, his heads not totally on the game. He needs to get himself sorted out, or his career, which has more than few years left in it (he's only 31 which is nothing for a center half), will soon be over. Who'd touch him now?

Trouble is, who's better? Senderos? The guys comical - or he would be if he was playing for someone else. Cygan? The worst centre half ever seen at highbury? And that's up against some pretty stiff competition I can tell you!

A half fit, messed up, Campbell playing alongside Toure, is better than those two clowns.

TBh I used to like Newcastle myself. The Keegan days (player and manager) meant a lot of neutrals had a soft spot for them. The antics of Sheppard & co, Souness, and Shearer himself's unpunished thuggery have switched people off. The Bowyer, Dyer business was the last 'nasty taste in the mouth' incident for many people.

The club has huge support, a big history, but increasingly (like Sunderland) is thinking small.

Time for a new broom?
