Europa League Thread

I know this competition isn't the most keenly followed with the Champions League being far superior, however Liverpool and Fulham are both through to the Quarter Finals.

Fulham had a stunning result, overturning a 3-1 loss in the first game to win 4-1 on the night (5-4 on aggregate)

Liverpool won overturning a 1-0 loss against Lille to win 3-0 on the night.

Good result for both clubs particularly Fulham, that will stay long in the memories of their fans

wouldn't be something if Liverpool won the competition forcing Spurs or Man City out of the Champions league. Would certainly make the europa league more influential.

Lost me there too.
How would Liverpool winning the UEFA cup knock whoever gets 4th out of the Champion's League?.

TBH, even if Liverpool won the UEFA cup, it's as a result of failing in the CL.
So it would be a consolation prize, at best.

It can't happen. The winner of the Europa League does not get a Champions League place. I assume the OP thought they did, but they don't.

I wouldn't be a bad idea though

I don't agree.
I don't even think CL flops should be allowed into the UEFA cup.
You flop in the CL, that should be your European forays finished, full stop, go home and cry.

Totally agree with this point.
Do CL winners get automatically entered in to the following seasons tournament? Or is it purely on where you finish in the league? The reason I ask is that I would also like the winners of the UEFA Cup have to defend it the following season.

Yep, they take the place of the last qualifying representative in the league for each footballing nation if need be.

I also don't think CL flops should be allowed into the Europa Cup, it's a farce. However I think rewarding the Europa winners with a CL place would be a good idea. It's more deserving than finishes 4th in the league, which is also a completely different competition

More deserving because Liverpool are struggling in the EPL this season perhaps. I don't mind the Europa winners taking their place in the CL but don't feel it should be at the expense of a club who've proved their worth in their own league over 38 games.

Agreed
I also think that the european cup should be brought back if im honest ths champions league malarky is good especally when we get to the latter stages as there can be some cracking football played but whats even worse is the fact that its all jsut money orientated aound revenue

You can honestly tell me that if Fulham won the europa league this season and you were sitting at the time in 4th you'd be saying the same

Struggling to secure 4th certainly

If it was in the rules at the beginning of the season I wouldn't have a problem with it, no. It makes more sense than a 4th place team entering the CL.

When we don't make 4th this season, I'd rather we didn't qualify for anything in Europe next season - I'd rather a full on attack on the domestic trophies instead. So I'd rather be 8th than 5th

Agreed when we went out of the cl i was hoping that we wouldnt be in the position we are in and would of prefered giving fringe players teh uefa cup but as its are only chance of some silverware we have to take it on the chin and ty and win the thing

I was going to say that's daft, as it ignores the income the UEFA cup must generate.
But doing some research, it doesn't look like it generates that much.
Getting to the UEFA final earns each club about £4m (excluding TV money).
Clubs can earn as much getting to the group stages of the CL than they can from getting to the UEFA final.
So maybe you're right, just stay at home and regroup for the next season.

Have been going to Fulham for 40 years and am on cloud cuckooland...2 years ago we were nearly down and now in the 1/4 of a European competition having knocked out the holders AND the favourites...

Loving every minute of it and the best part is our manager going on TV and saying that a lot of teams would be envious of our hectic schedule with the FA Cup 1/4 final replay, league fixtures building up 'cos of Europe and the league itself...the man is a Fulham legend after 2 years in the job and we love him...still, wouldn't it be so Fulhamish if we actually won nothing...

Dempseys goal was worthy of any game in any league in the world and the man will be a threat to England in the world cup...

A few members of my family are regulars at Craven Cottage too....I have to agree, Hodgson has done a fine job.

When did you beat Liverpool in the Europa League

But I do agree with you about Hodgson. He's been a quality manager for years and If I'm correct in saying, the Inter Milan fans hold him in high regard too

Its all going wrong for the 10 redmen

Not end the world at 2-1

But silly moments cost us, with 2 pens and a red card for babbel. Torres missed a sitter earlier.
