David Beckham tears his achilles

Just watching match of the day 2 and Adrian Charles said Beckham was injured in the match against Chievo. Apparently he was distraught and was shooting at the bench "it's broken" - in reference to his foot.

Well it appears he has in fact torn his Achilles - breaking news on the Guardian.
That's pretty sad can't really see him being fit for the WC.

I think Capello would have wanted him in the squad as an inspirational figure for the younger players, apart from Rooney, Terry and possibly Gerrard there arent many leaders in the team.

Sad if this is how it ends, not an England or United fan but have a lot of respect for David Beckham.

I'd imagine his playing career is over, it's a bad injury for a 34 year old to have to recover from. If I were Capello I'd be tempted to offer him a coaching/motivational role and take him with me anyway!

I like the use of the pun saying all our players are "passed" it.

Real shame for Beckham as he would have been in the squad for the World Cup without doubt and as he showed when he came on for AC Milan he still has the quality and fitness to perform at the highest level.

Bloodzeed - saying Gerrard and Lampard are past it is ridiculous as clearly they are the two best English midfielders in the Premiership and along with Gareth Barry will form the basis of our midfield in the World Cup.

This is very sad. He would have been a good impact player from the bench IMO. Plus he is the most experienced player in the squad - would have helped the younger players deal with the experience no doubt.

What irritates me more is Lennon is taking a while to recover, no one knows if/when he is going to be fit, Wright Philips plays well for England but his form for Manchester City has been inconsistent. This makes the reality of Theo Walcott being on the plane to South Africa even more likely .

Bloodzeed can only be joking, or he is clueless Plonk Gerrard into a team which is playing well and he'll show us all exactly what he's capable of...we'll see if he's passed/past it then! The guys 30 in a couple of months and has 3 years left at the 'top level'.

I feel sorry for Beckham but whilst his "niche" may still be well respected we have to be brutally honest and say this is a guy who is 4 years older than he was last time around and he proved not to be particularly great then. I think it's accepted he was highly unlikely to start games meaning his exemption opens to door to another (younger, fitter, hungrier) player and leaves the whole 'Beckham circus' at home

He would've gone & easily deserves to be in the squad. It's a big loss to our WC hopes, he still has/had a lot to offer the team, not just dead balls.

As for saying Gerrard & Lampard are past it - that's just ridiculous

Good shout this, I think he'll be invited along as an ambassador anyway with this 2018 bid looming. Gutted for Beckham on a personal level, but from a England perspective I'm more concerned about whether Ashley Cole will make it.

Arguably Beckham is still a big loss to an England squad, not only for his inspirational performance on the pitch but his work ethic and leadership. To be honest, there are plenty of players to fill the void. AJ at Man City looks promising for a start....

Bridge out for personal reasons
Terry an idiot
Walcott not always starting
Rio niggling problems
Hargreaves no games,

anyone else...

waiting on Rooney to get injured...that would be it

A big shame, totally agree that it's more for his experience than his performances that he'll be missed.

I still can't get my head around why Capello won't give Ashley Young a proper go (not a 15 minute cameo in a pointless friendly). He's been consistently excellent since he joined villa, plus he can play on either side.

He was excellent at the beginning of last season then dipped massively. This season he's been hot & cold. So not consistant at all

Fair enough, I don't watch Villa week in week out. However he should definitely be in contention given the other options we have on the wings.

Milner's shinning this season & can play where Young does or in the middle + Downing has been as good as Young recently. Johnson at Man City deserves a look too IMO. I can't believe more teams weren't in for him in January. Absolute bargin

Milner would be my choice.

Johnson, well I'm gutted he didn't come to Chelsea....you can't help but think Stuart Pearce must have mentioned him a few times to Capello. I think he'll be the *wildcard* selection for the squad....hopefully over Downing!

Really, the most logical replacement for Beckham is Bentley.
Both very similar players, preferring to cross from deep rather than take defenders on.
Wheras Lennon prefers to take the man on and cross from the byline.

I don't think Beckham was going to the WC to ever really feature on the right. He was going to be a playmaker off the bench if required.

Yeah but in the modern game you want the wide men who can push forward, take players on, apply pressure and with bags of pace. You mention Bentley but Bale on the other flank has been awesome (I know he is not English)

I think fitness permitting, Walcott and Milner are already in the squad. Remember Capello has said he knows most of the squad anyway and it is just a handful of places up for grabs

Fabio will have a bigger headache over the third keeper slot and defence

The only thing Bentley would be fit for would be pushing Beckham around in a wheelchair, and even then he'd probably do a **** poor job of it.

I say this as a lifelong Spurs fan.

From watching the City game yesterday, I'd say give Johnson a shout, first time I've seen him and he looked class, certainly made Wright-Philips look average when he replaced him.

Gotta love the TV (can't remember if it was BBC or ITV) News last night as they displayed diagrams of a foot - "well of course the nation is in mourning".

Er, no.
