Settle this! Pato or Torres?

Hi all,

I've been having a bit of an ongoing argument with my bro in law who is an avid Liverpool fan.

I am a Villa man with a major soft touch for AC Milan too. I made a comment that I would not swap Pato for Torres as I think Pato is unbelievably brilliant and will be World Player of the Year in the next 4 or 5 years without doubt.

He went a bit nuts at this statement which I firmly stand by.

I would like to know, if you were a football manager who would you prefer in your team and why?

Pato - Sumpremely gifted footballer who is capable of scoring from any situation. 25 yarders and spectecular volleys as well as the odd header here and now. Unbelievably skillful. All round team player

Torres - Out and out goalscorer, top class finisher, bags of pace and trickery. Will run all day and an inredible goalscoring record.

I would also like to stress that I would prefer tunnel visioned Liverpool/Milan fans didn't vote. This is aimed at neutrals only!

Tunnel visioned Liverpool Fans
Do i get discounted then.

Im a big fan of Pato huge fan to be honest but i think your putting torres at like 29 year old Fernando at 25 with 50 goals in 72 apps at this moment gets my vote

Are we talking just in the premiership? If that's the case then Torres, he's a proven goalscorer in the Prem. Actually he's a proven player at all levels.

Pato has the potential to be brilliant, but as an Arsenal fan I've heard about nothing but potential for last few seasons!

Pato plays in Seria A so I would include that too

True, but I rate the Prem more highly than Serie A.

OK then to be more specific, it is just between the 2 players. Leagues are irrelevant as far as this poll is concerned!

Still Torres, though that is simply based on the little I have seen Pato play. When I've seen him play in the CL he looked alright, but nothing special.

I think i'm right in saying that by the age Pato is now, Torres was already club captain and had been the third highest scorer in la liga the previous season. Comparing the two now is perhaps a little unfair on Pato as Torres is without a doubt currently the better player but he does have 5 years on Pato. However as I mention to begin with, Torres was perhaps performing better at 19-20 than Pato is currently. Torres has begun to realise his potential, Pato has yet to do so, as such we dont know which way his career will go. If Torres was in the twilight of his career I would possibly opt for the younger player but as he is not yet even in his peak then its unquestionably torres

I think it's inevitable most would say Torres as most here have seen a lot more of Torres than Pato.

I think this it's only natural for fans to opt for that which they can associate directly with. For example most of the British public would rate Alex Ferguson as the greatest manager ever yet Giovanni Trapattoni's CV, for example, is far more impressive, overall.

That's exactly what I thought would happen, although I thought there would be a wee bit more support for Pato. I really think he is going to be brilliant and I think he has already proven he is world class. Right up there with the likes of Ronaldo, Torres, Kaka, Messi, Ibrahimovic etc

I maintain that in a few years some of you guys will remember posting on this thread and think 'maybe that guy isn't a complete idiot after all'.

Certainly had me reaching for wiki this statement... Both very impressive CVs nonetheless!

Giovanni Trapattoni - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've voted Torres purely as he is a more proven player both in PL, CL and International terms. Pato has massive potential however this has yet to materialise to much outside of Serie A.

Out of the two Torres.

David Villa is the best striker in world football though. It bugs me when Torres is mentioned as the best. He's probably the second bes and is immense but Villa is better than him.

His goal to game ratio for both club and country is frightening.

Torres no question lol but I then again I'm a biased Liverpool fan Pato has a lot of potential, but as others have said needs to prove himself outside of Serie A.

No he doesn't that's like saying Shearer wasnt a great striker because he never played outside of England or Roberto Baggio should have moved abroad to prove he was great. Raul should have moved from Real Madrid etc...

Pato just needs to score more goals and prove himself over a sustained period, The league he pays in doesn't matter.

I think the 'outside Serie A' comment was aimed at Champions League and International appearances (like my earlier post). Pato hasn't performed anywhere near as well in those two compared to Serie A....yet

Deffo not. For the last 8 seasons he's scored more than 20 goals a season and is Spains 2nd top goalscorer ever playing over 20 games less than Torres. I watch alot of Spanish Football and Villa is immense, Torres gets all he plaudits here as he plays here but people would realise how good Villa is if he played week in week out over here for the British public to see.

Both have fantastic goal to game ratios though...

419 games in all comps too 176 goals for Torres

487 games in all comps too 257 goals for Villa.

Well he's starting to prove himself in the Champions League too. How about his brilliant second against Real Madrid when the ball was floated accross by Seedorf and he cooly volleyed past one of the best keepers in the world? Most strikers in world football would have bricked it at that opportunity!

Games don't come much bigger than Real Madrid vs AC Milan and Pato proved he is world class. In both matches actually. He scored what should have been a fantastic winner in the 2nd group match between the two but it was unfairly disallowed for a foul that never happened.

I hope he is fit for the United games and then you will see! Also Ronaldinho is coming back to his brilliant best

I agree he played well against Madrid....two things though. Their defence isn't the best (he did give them a torrid time) and he hardly shone against the other opponents. He just isn't consistent enough at this stage (IMO).

If fully fit, then Torres for me.

PAto is very good and a great prospect, but Torres, when fully fit, is probably the Number 1 striker in the world.

I do believe that Torres is a better player at the moment, but Pato can become better.
Plus Pato plays more wide than an out an out striker like torres, and in a more defensive league were goals come at a higher premium.
Plus i think the defending in the premiere league is really bad (especially lower end teams) and that has contributed in him scoring a load of goals since coming here, considering his record in spain wasn't that great.
