Video Replays in Football

Surely after Henry's blatant handball helps send France to the World Cup and Ireland out its time to bring in video replay technology - what do you guys think?

As an Irishman all I can say is gutted. Absolutely gutted.

To go out in that manner is sickening. And for me Thierry Henry has sunk down the list of great players dramatically. For me he will now always be a great footballer, goal scorer and CHEAT. End of.

As for video replays. Can't see FIFA ever allowing them to be honest - they are too backward in their thinking.

I have a better idea. Let the ref ask the player, in this case Henry, "did you handle the ball". If he says yeah I did then the ref can diallow the goal, award a free to Ireland and all is ok. If he takes the chance and says "No", and then FIFA look at the video afterwards then he suffers a 3 month ban, or 6 months or whatever.

That would soon put the cheating out of them.

On a final note, that was the best Irish performance in years, and I was so proud of the team tonight. We are not blessed with great players, but we should have had that game out of sight tonight. France are a very average side, and I will be cheering on whoever is playing them next WC.

What do we think??..Michel Platini is the head of UEFA...Michel Platini is also a Frenchman.......no chance replays will be brought in.

Well done France....you beat the mighty Irish by a deflected goal, then an offside goal that you decided to handle as well.......

Disgusted.

What?...like as defending champions they did so well in Japan / Korea.

France are like England, they win it in they own country, but do nothing in any other finals.

Henry looked ashamed at the end and he was almost apologising to Richard Dunne. You can't necessarily blame the player but surely the officials can have access to a quick video replay to check decisions that affect goals / penalties etc.

You could have a system like in tennis where you have so many challenges and if you are proved right, you keep the challenge for later. Say one in each half.

What about KEano tonight? Did fantastically well but missed couple good chances to finish it off. But played 10 times better than Dublin for me.

Has everyone looked at the lineup of teams for WC2010? Its truly shocking. IF France and Portugal had gone out tonight I think Platini would have topped himself !!!

I can't see myself getting too excited about the tournament next year - too many games will be rubbish.

And on a final note, if England don't win this one, with all the 'talent' they have plus the fact that there is only about 3 good teams at it, then they never will.

Woah woah woah, why bring England into this? Unless you want someone to quip "at least we'll be there"

Seriously though, that has to be one of the most blatant handballs i've ever seen. It looks bad to start with, but when you slow it right down you can clearly see him handle it twice to control it - he uses his arm/wrist and then actually gives it a little tap with his hand just for good measure.

Feel sorry for the Irish as they were meant to have played so good. You could see from Henry's body language at the end that he felt a tad embarressed and so he should.

The only real way around cheats is to ban them, simply give Henry 3-5 match ban(in the World Cup), no consilation to the Irish but nothing can be done now.

I was amazed to be honest that at the end no Irish player chinned Henry i would have.

Apologies English fans.....I missed the sarcasm in Ps3's post and took the bait.

I was only pointing out that France didn't do too welll as defending champs in Japan when PS3 seemed to suggest in his post that they will inevitably do well in South Africa.

Yeah i have always thought that would be good, but the football authorities are a funny bunch, we'll need to wait for all the old farts to die off before changes will be made.

Unfortunately I watched the game in a pub tonight (in Coventry) so didn't take much much notice of Keane's individual perforformance. I did want him to get a 2nd so I could come here and slag you off (how sad is that!!!)

Duff did well for the goal, but if he'd only shown more composure and cut inside when 1 on 1 instead of shooting, things could have been much different, of if Doyle had connected with that header.

Robbie did what he always does...points a bit, shouts a bit, and scores.

Just think .... all the Irish, Scottish and Welsh can all "unite" behind England during South Africa 2010 and cheer on the boys to bring the cup home back to these shores ....

Difference being, us Irish won't be letting Henry The Cheat bother us 23 years after the event. We'll get on with it.

But tonight I do know how you felt at the time. Sickening to lose like that.

As for France doing well at the WC. There is a chance they will as half the countries at it are absolute cack. It is the worst WC ever, easily.

But they struggled in recent times, and I wouldn't be so sure if they meet a half decent side like Chile or someone - you never know.

Lol nice one we know they're always right behind us.On a serious note it does seem strange as me and all the English in the pub were behind the Irish tonight, but come the world cup the home nations will cheer on anyone that plays us

Not sad at all.

Believe it or not, when he went round the keeper (should have chipped it over him) and missed I said to myself, "Jez if he had scored that I would have owed Dony an apology". How sad is that?

Duffer was shocking for the 1 on 1. How can you earn £40k per week and have no right foot as a pro footballer? Suppose it sums up the standard of the game these days.

I'm guessing that may have been the reason he was crying at the end. No more chances to get to a WC, and if only I could have slotted that chance in. I'm sure a few other IRish players will be thinking that tonight.

Here's to the next Euro Championship.

If a Spurs player (or ex player) lines up for England, I'll always want them to do well.......but I've no love for any Arsenal, Chelsea or Utd player who plays for England,......why would I?

Maybe 23 years later you wont still be haunted by a decision like that, but nor would i from a qualifier. As to it being the worst world cup ever, think yourself lucky you wont have to watch it.Im going out there to support my country and win or loose i will enjoy it.Shame some bitter people and their country cant qualify to play some of the cack that were atually good enough to get their in the first place!

I wouldn't expect you to! But being Irish i dont know why you would want to cheer on a player from North London? You dont seem that keen on any part of England!

I started supporting Spurs the year Pat Jennings won the PFA player of he year....(check my location then wiki Pat )

I'm not sure what you mean about me not liking England,....I've lived for 4 yrs in west London and have many friends from that area. I've worked for a company in Sutton Coldfield for 4 years and get on very well with all staff there, and I'm currently sitting in a hotel in Coventry .

Or do you mean my political beliefs???....in which case you are confusing my opinion of English people with my opinions of the English government (very different things ).

Time I went for another pint...night all.

If Keane had done the same thing, would you be so apoplectic with rage?

I don't think so.

Funny how the guy who supports the team fielding Cristiano Ronaldo is acting so indignant about cheating.

2 things in response. Ronaldo has been injured most of the season and so isn't doing much diving these days. And even when he was playing he seems to have knocked the diving on the head. In fact he had knocked most of it on the head during his last season for Man Utd. I think it may just be a case of an Englishman holding yet another grudge against a footballer who helped knock you out of a tournament.

And of course I would not be happy if Keano had done that to win the game. I would have been embarrassed but I would not have been able to change it. I would just have had to celebrate tonight, nurse the sore head and drink a terrible amount of Vitamin G in the pubs when Ireland were playing next summer. But alas its not to be.

Hmm strange. Eduardo dived to win a penalty against Celtic earlier in the season and I wasn't the slightest bit bothered

And true to form, United beat us soon after when Rooney dived to win a penalty against us. You win some, you lose some.

Henry has lost out in the past thanks to cheating from other players, so fair dues to him if the tide swings in his favour for once.
