just seen the ref give liverpool a penalty (versus birmingham). It was not a penalty. IT IS NOW TIME TO USE THE TV REPLAYS LIKE ALL THE OTHER SPORTS. I am not a birmingham fan.

Re: referees

We all know the refs are biased towards the "big 4". Should have seen the ref biased towards chelsea at the villa game a few weeks back, it was a joke.

They cave under the media attention and the immunity of their managers from the FA on any disciplinary issues.

Re: referees

Its a joke.

I don't understand why people are so against action replay, by not using it is just delaying the inevitable because we can be sure in the future this will be used so why not now?

I think it should be used for penaltys, red cards & suspicious goals (action replay to be used at the refs disgretion, if hes sure of what hes seen then theres no need for a second look just like in rugby)

Atleast a couple games a week are soaked in controversy because of questionable decisions & this would solve most really easily.

I bet this will be implemented 2012 Euros / 2014 World Cup & then adopted by leagues.

Re: referees

I can see why the Ref made the mistake in this case, his line of site of the incident was looking at the back of Carsley as he went into the tackle, I doubt he could actually see Carselys leg to see if their was any contact but the theatrics of Ngog was enough to convince him their must have been.

Wrong decision and terrible dive from Ngog but without actually having access to a replay I can easily see how the ref got it wrong tonight

That's the problem though, imo.
If he doesn't see it, he shouldn't give anything, full stop.
A ref should only go on what he actually sees, not what he thinks might have happened.

Re: referees

A case in point is Johnny Evans' karate kick into Drogba's midriff. You could only see the contact from the goalie's position. The ref can't have seen that, but decided to give Drogba a yellow card because he has form for diving.

I've just seen the dive.
What a disgrace.
10 match bans would soon put a stop to this rubbish.

they need to be left alone to get on with the job. all the media attention and pressure just doesn't help. Same goes for England at big tournamounts just let them get on with it!

i think it was the 'seizure' afterwards that got him booked, he looked like a complete idiot, it was innocent from evans, he was just off balance when he jumped and his foot went up

doesn't quite make up for all the dodgy decisions that went Chelsea's way in that match though, Rooney was right about facing 12 men!

It's his reputation that goes against him.

Find it soo funny watching vids on youtube of Drogba diving around all over the floor!

Refs have been poor this season.

Please no video replays. Football has been fine for hundreds of years, diving happened back then too, it's not a new thing.

Re: referees

Whilst I agree the quality of the refereeing is sometimes poor, on the whole they do a good job. I once refereed at amateur level and making split second decisions, constantly in an intense environment obviously comes with experience but is still hard to do.

I'm sure we've all been to a match in person and seen an incident in real time without being able to say for sure which way the decision should of gone. Clearly we are not as close to the action as the man in charge but decisions are based on our own interpretation, which is why millions of people banter in pubs all over the country every weekend over such incidents. Everyone has their own opinion.

If we allow such decisions to be made every time by 'video evidence' we will kill a huge part of the game. Can you imagine watching every match from thereon knowing that it doesn't matter whether you thought it was a penalty or not as someone else, who you'll never see, is going to decide for you? I imagine most referees would feel undermined, if anything it could have the opposite effect and badly effect their confidence.

The problem we have now is the exposure these referees are subjected to on TV. Every man and his dog can sit in the lounge week after week shouting 'blatant dive!'. We've created a culture where millions of people can watch a game from various angles with the benefit of slow mo and replays leaving us to scorn the man actually in charge. I think it's unfair.

One of the greatest things about football is the human element, i.e 23 men on a pitch with a ball and an objective. The manager decides who to start with, the striker decides whether to shoot or pass and the goalkeeper decides whether to dive left or right. Just as a referee decides whether to blow or wave play on. They all sometimes make a right decision, and invariably a wrong one.

Maybe....he didn't help himself at all with that reaction.

Okey dokey....so he wasn't looking at where his foot was aiming then? He clearly went into Drogba intentionally - also when they both fell to the ground did you not a kick-out from Evans? No? I wouldn't expect you to...

Makes a change being on the receiving end then.

In all honesty, yes ref's seem to be getting things wrong and yes, it is time for video replays to be introduced. One thing though, the players have to start helping themselves. I note Wes Brown banging on about being fouled by Drogba in the lead-up to the goal on Sunday....you'd have thought Brown was a leaf in a gale force wind the amount of effort it took to 'haul' him down.

Fantastic post.

Although I was gutted/annoyed whatever at the 17 extra minutes United got in the Derby, I said to everyone the following week that I wouldn't change it though, otherwise there would be nothing to talk about for the week inbetween games.

I thought the yellow was for Drog jumping at Evans not looking to get the ball? Drogba's injury claims are about as credible as Fergie's opinion of referees these days whether they have any merit or not...

It was hilarious the way Drogba was all winded and struggling to move, but when he saw the yellow, he instantly became more mobile.

This is the same Rooney that dived twice against Arsenal in recent years to win penalties right?

He wasn't moaning at the ref then.

Re: referees

I don't think footballs governing bodys have helped refs in any way, shape or form with the silly rule changes and not allowing them to use their discretion.
Cards get strewn around like confetti nowadays for the most minor of offences.
Saying that, some refs appear to want to be bigger stars and have more bearing on the result of a game than the players.

As for video replays i'm not really in favour of them because it can't be implemented at lower levels of football (which after all is meant to be the "peoples game") and the way laws change in todays game there would be replays for practically everything in the end

Unless it's to see whether the ball crossed the line i can't see any reason at all for replays

In 2 hours time the mother of all WC qualifying games kicks off - Egypt v Algeria finals play-off. This isn't a football, it's war & where have they brought a referee in to handle a game of enormous importance? The Seychelles - absolutely hilarious. It could well end with 7 players each.

The Seychelles?!?!?
Do they even have a football pitch in The Seychelles?
Or was he just born there and lives somewhere else?
