Southgates Departure

I feel sorry for him, i dont think it was an ideal situation for him right from the off but boro needed a change desperately. If it wasnt for one of the best chairman in the game he'd of gone alot sooner. He was a great club captain and servant to his country and an excellent professional.

Who takes the job now?

Re: Southgates Departure

Seems an odd decision on the back of a win that sees them a single point off the top.

Re: Southgates Departure

Wouldn't sack him when he is a point from relegation , but will when a point off promotion ? Does seem an odd decision

Re: Southgates Departure

I'm sure the fact the fans up here are in open revolt against him might have something to do with it - it's years since we've had 17k at a game. Three home defeats on the trot wrote his ticket and as much as I respect him as one of our best defenders ever he was next to useless as a manager. Glad to be rid and only sorry it wasn't sooner.

edit: as for the timing - it suggests SG already has someone up his sleeve, fingers crossed it's not Gordon Strachen

Was innevitable.

The fans voted with their feet, Southgate lost confidence of most of the fans well over a year ago and even more have lost confidence the last few months.

The lowest EVER league crowd at the riverside last night but even before the game rumours were rife up here about Southgate being sacked and that Strachan is a stick on for the job.

Boro may be one point off top but they haven't played that well and from all acounts frmo mates who are season ticket holders they've wanted him gone for a while and watching their home games this year has been woeful.

Best off getting rid of Southgate now whilst the club is in a good position to kick on and whilst the new man brought in doesnt have to be performing miracles and the job still looks like a great prospect.

They'll have two months to asses the current players and then go from there in January.

Yep that sounds about right to me.

Re: Southgates Departure

As a boro fan and season ticket holder, I do have mixed feelings about this. He was a fantastic player and captain for us but as a manager, he failed miserably. I personally would have let him go at the end of last season after relegation but Steve Gibson thought otherwise.
I'm still not sure who I would bring in but strong rumours are that we won't even have to change the training bibs that southgate once wore........... GS?

So what's that, 6 points from 7 games since Southgate was sacked compared to 10 from his last 7 games.

1 point off the top when sacked & now 9 points adrift of an automatic promotion place.
