Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

Interesting take from stan collymore from his twitter and from the london lite newspaper.

Stan Collymore (StanCollymore) on Twitter

He basicly says why the hell did beckham get man of the match.

Quote:
Collymore told astonished listeners, Disgusted! Beckham only been on for 15minutes. he played a short corner and ended up in a goal, crazy. He's had about 6 touches!
It was then later revealed that it was "steve bruce" that made the choice.

Collymore then said:

Quote:
Steve Bruce? Unbelievable. James Miner did a better job than Beckham. This is the problem we have with our nation. we cannot get passed a man who is married to a spice girl, who lives in holywood, who wears a sarong, etc etc, Joke, Absolute Joke
LOL!!!!!!!!

Re: Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

Any wonder Peter Crouch gets over looked all the time despite his scoring record. If only he was better looking.

Watching the analysis after the game it was showing what Beckham did during the game, and most of his passes did not even reach a team-mate.

Even Capello said giving him MOTM was like Obama getting the Noble Peace Prize.

I think he was the one who, when they interviewed him when asked "What would you have been if you weren't a footballer" he said "A Virgin"

Not sure Collymore should be mentioning Hollywood, he was quite happy to take a bit part in basic instinct 2 if I remember rightly.

Re: Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

I found it very surprising that Ben Foster got the goalkeeper's shirt too. With James injured and Green suspended surely the like of Paul Robinson, Chris Kirkland and Joe Hart are better placed than Foster? He won't play another game for United when Van Der Sar is fit and has looked very dodgy so far this season.

Sometimes, I think its more about the team you play for than your actual ability.

Re: Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

Here's my conspiracy theory.

Its all a hidden agenda to get Beckham selected for the WC squad.

Most football fans, if they know their game and are brutally honest, would say that Becks is past it at the highest level of football, and will not figure if he was to come up against Brazil, Spain or Holland in the WC.

But I think there is an element who really want him in the team, simply for publicity. Don't ask me who it is. PErhaps the FA, perhaps certain journo's who like him, perhaps someone attached to Becks himself who has the power/money to influence media and indeed individuals so that they give him rave reviews and MOTM awards when he doesn't deserve them.

Personally, I would bet my mortgage on Becks being at the WC next year.

Crouch is pretty funny. I seem to remember him having surgery on his nose, and after he was back playing, an interviewer on MOTD asked him how it was, and he said something like "Yeah the nose is fine, and now I'm looking like a million dollars as well"

Very underrated in amongst the erm, y'know erm, Wayne like Rooney's and erm, y'know, the like.

Re: Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

All last night's match showed me was just how much England will struggle during the World Cup, after David James, there is nobody who has the ability to step in during international tournaments. God help England if James is injured.

I don't understand the fascination with David Beckham..... sure, he was 'once' one of the best midfielders in the world but now..... never. How the heck does he still get anywhere near the first team.

England rested a fair few players last night and the replacements were ok for the opponents they had, anyone better would have overcome them easily. It really shows a lack of strength throughout the squad, Capello must be praying his squad can stay injury free going into the tournament.

IMHO Beckham is the best passer of the ball that the England team have by a way at the moment.

Him and Milner did more than the rest of the midfield put together for the small part of the match they were on.

Really? I wasn't paying particularly close attention but I didn't notice that Foster had a stinker last night. Was he that terrible?

On Beckham, he offers something a little bit different to Lennon, Wright-Phillips & Walcott. I don't see him as a starter but surely a good squad player, you know he'll give 100%, is an inspiration to the younger players and still is a threat from set pieces. I think I'd take him for those reasons alone.

better shorter passes maybe... Beckham is still better on the longer passes... he is quality and has a great attitude... oh god how did I end up defending him ?

Anyway he is worth a squad position !

Re: Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

Beckham is a fine passer but no better than the other players recently mentioned.

If fit and playing in Italy, he'll be there on the plane 100%, for some right reasons but equally as many wrong ones!

I was reading this thread thinking I was the only one that thought that!

IMO he is still plenty good enough to be in the squad. He can make things happen from out of nowhere.

He's never had the legs to run past people and get a cross in, so the fact that he's getting older has no impact at all for me. He doesn't need too to beat people. Give him the ball anywhere and he'll create chances especially playing in the same team as Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard.

Beckham HAS to be (and will be) going to the world cup imo.

Re: Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

Beckham is still quality at crossing and passing.

I don't know why people go on at him so much just because of his age He just gives the team an extra option.

I'd have him in the team over Fat Frank any day.

Re: Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

Only problem I have with Beckham is, if we get 7 free kicks in target range within a game, he'll take all 7 even if he couldn't hit a barn door for the first 6. Great free kick he scored against Greece to take us to the world cup but if you remember how many he missed prior to that. With other players in the team they'll have a couple of goes and then it will pass to somebody else.

Aside from that, on his day nobody knocks a long ball better than him in the game imo and if we utilise croches's height it's another weapon to use in a game if you can't play through a team on the floor. I think it's fair to say England can't play the sort of game Arsenal do on a regular basis anyway.

Re: Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

I still think Beckham is good enough to be in the squad. I think he'd also be good for moral amongst the team in general.

The reason we may fail in the World Cup is that our defence is still crap. The only way we are going to progress to the final is to attack teams and score more than the opposition - like the Holland and Brazil teams do. I don't think either of those 2 great footballing nations have been any good defensively and so they've always played to their strengths. We need to realise that we are poor defensively and play accordingly.

Personally I'd put SWP above Lennon...but based on him playing on the left ( nice move Fabio) he wouldn't get near the squad.

Re: Our nation cannot get passed Beckham

I have no doubt beckham will be in the squad.
I have no doubt he is the most overrated player in history.
The fact he has ONE weapon in his armory makes him very predictable. And easy to play against.
Right foot-wonderful, but I'd expect someone who takes EVERY free kick to have scored more goals for England, and at least one at wembley.
I remember the sendings off (more than any other England player), and the missed, not saved, penalties. He's supposed to be a great passer and can't guarantee getting the ball on target from 11 yards???????????????

He's lucky to have had any sort of a career in football. Can't tackle, can't dribble, can't head, can't pass with his left foot, these days can't pass with his right foot. He's what we called a carthorse when I was at school.

But then £100k+ a week doesn't buy much these days.

I'd say England CANNOT win the world cup with him, so let's try to win it without him.

Eh? I'll have some of the pills that you have been taking

Predictable? Then how is it that every team has ever played for have scored hat fulls of goals from his "predicatable" style of play? If he was that easy to play against then surely he wouldn't have had the career that he has?

He is without doubt one of the best passers and crossers of a ball that the modern game has seen. And you don't play for 3 of the worlds biggest clubs if your a "Cart Horse"..........

In regard to the OP's post........ Sounds like sour grapes from Collymore to me. A man that had it all, could have had more, but lost it all through his own stupidity.

I seem to recall depression had something to do with his problems. Obviously I wouldn't accept depression being any form of excuse for beating up women though, just feel their might be a little more to it that stupidity.

Yep he was treated in '98 for depression. But he threw his Liverpool career (the best part of his career) away well before then as he moved to Villa in '97.

Now you've missed one you know. I think Rooney still has 4 books to go on his contract.

I guess you feel there's little chance of seeing a book from Bellamy then.
